Most people who have single digit miles on their cars, ordered it. What we test drove is what people buy on the lot.

I bought mine off the lot. It had 2 miles on it when they first put it in the showroom in September (I was there the day it came in) and no one was allowed to test drive it - even me to my annoyance as I had driven all the way up there just to test drive one.

Anyway, in December it was still there with the same 2 miles on the odometer, so I bought it at a discount and when I picked it up 2 days later it had 13 miles on it. I guess they have to do a test drive after it had been sitting there for so long.

So little shady trick, but many dealers would do this in the past.

If you unplugged the odometer fuse it would not read miles. - I know many dealers who have done this on performance models, it would disable the cluster and some other features but no miles would be recorded to the odometer too.

Cheating can happen.. on the F80's I'm not sure and havent tried.

Really? Is it that easy to stop odometer working especially with the current technology on these cars?

Sadly on some cars it is... Chrysler and Benz are crazy easy.

The E46 M3 guys used to unplug a few fuses and it would disable the cluster and stop the miles from racking up.

The milage might be recorded at the ECU, but the cluster would not rack up miles.

Even in my old E39 you would get little "dot" next to mileage indicating there is difference between central brain and ODO. Which can be fixed by dealer

So, dealer can do it I bet. But I'm sure BMW HQ will know about this too, because dealer's computer will be used to code ODO to main brain.

The cars have many more miles on them than what you see on the odo at delivery, since the odo is reset at the VDC ( this is allowed only once in the cars life)

It takes many miles to move from final production, through alignment, engine and gearbox testing on high speed, Dyno, rattle tests track, to waiting area at factory, onto train/truck, to waiting area at shipyard, onto the large ships, off the ship, to transport at arriving doc, to VDC.

The miles you see are from last VDC check onto delivery truck and around dealer lot.

When I picked it up at the dealer on 7/19 it had over 2800 miles on it. But just 2 km when I picked it up at the Welt on 5/13!
