12V Outlet Power Question/V1

Just got my Valentine 1 delivered and I have it installed, currently using the cigarette power outlet; when I completely shutoff the car (MY17-F82.6MT) - pressing the OFF BUTTON X2, the radar detector still stays on. Went back to check after 20+ minutes and still the same result. I have the mirror tap connector coming this Friday that I'll be connecting to the rain sensor, but who knows when I'll get up the nerve to do the DIY.

Should the power turn off to the the V1 when the vehicle is powered down; even further, does that outlet always stay on when something is plugged into it?

Thanks for your help!

i know that power to USB outlets stays "ON" even when the car is shut off. so i always have to remove the usb cords from the plug when i turn off the car. definitely don't charge your phone or tablet when the car is shut off.

if power is still running from the cigarette lighters that could potentially be a serious power drain issue.

The USB inputs were next on my list, so thanks for info.

My last car (LR3) did not feed power to the cigarette outlet on the center console and Im shocked it does in this instance. Would it be safe to say that simply turning off the V1 will kill the drain at the time I shutoff the car? This just gives me all the more reason to install the mirror hookup as soon as I get the wiring.

I thought all the sockets are switched power, but with a delayed off. I use the one under the glove compartment for my dash-cam, and know for sure it powers off after 10 minutes or so.

There is really no concern of draining your battery, as it will shut itself off after a certain threshold to ensure there is enough juice left for starting the car again.

The DIY for installing V1 is really easy just so you know. I got mine done in less than 30 minutes.

I timed it and all of my USB converters with blue power LEDs plugged into the 12V ports shut off in about 2 minutes.

BTW, BMW has varied the behavior of the 12V ports in different models and model years. My '06 Z4 M Roadster has continuous power to the 12V port in the "ashtray". I melted a cheap USB adapter that was plugged in overnight. My wife's '11 335is shuts off power to all 12V ports immediately.

I'm particularly referring to the ashtray outlet... it doesn't shut off in F82 17' - unless I'm a complete idiot and missing something! I wonder if this can be coded based on personal preference, bc now I have to be careful with anything I plugin for the future.

Thanks for input... Im going to tackle the mirror tap tomorrow.

Do you lock your car after parking it? The car takes longer to shut down the electronics if you don't lock it. I always lock mine, even in the garage, and my "ashtray" port shuts down after around 2 minutes.

This is one of the reasons that I got USB converters that have a small blue light on them is so that I would be sure that there is no constant power to the 12V ports, based on my experience with my Z4 M Roadster. Since BMW changes behaviours apparently randomly, maybe the '17s exhibit a different behaviour.

Yup, locked the car when I went into the gym, and left the V1 "powered" just to see if there was a delay, and it was still on when I returned. For those who might question my workout routine... its greater than 20 mins! Im going to install the mirror mount today, and be done with this saga, and ask the BMW Geniuses this Wed to fill me in during my 1200 mile break-in service.

I was dealing with the same thing and had constant power to the cigarette socket in the ashtray also. I hardwired mine and as well but I used Invisicord's connectors because they had one that had the double plug for the bluetooth module and detector. Works like a charm!

I just timed it last night. After turning off the engine, I had the radio on. Both the front ash tray lighter socket and the socket under the glove compartment shut off after 12 minutes. Maybe there is a difference between the '17 and '16 models? Mine is MY2016 F80.

I have found if there are no signal detections from my valentine during the "on time before power off" the car shuts down the ashtray port after x mins(never timed it). If I pull into a shopping center and leave the car with the detector picking up radar, it stays on regardless of the shutdown time.

That is how it has been working on my 2017.

Ok, I also went out again just now to test this, since these things should be consistent and not illogical!

For the first test, I sat in the car, turned on the ignition, then turned it off again, and then without getting out, I locked the door by pressing the lock button on the remote, and set a timer. At 5 minutes the lights on my USB adapters were still on and I gave up, unlocked the car, got out, and locked it.

For the second test, I unlocked the car, turned on the ignition, turned it off, exited and locked the car, and set a timer. I stood outside the car by the left rear window which allowed me to see both the USB adapter plugged into the ashtray and the one plugged into the rear console (back seat). The dash light went out around 18 seconds. At around 3 minutes both lights on the USB adapters went out, so I may have remembered the time period incorrectly from when I first tested this and it was 3 minutes, not 2 minutes. The whole point of my initial test was to determine whether the 12V sockets shut off or not.

For the third test, I did the same thing as test #2, but instead of locking the car I left it unlocked. At 5 minutes the lights on the USB adapters were still on, so I gave up and locked the car. I went in the house and came out about 5 minutes later and the lights were out.

Conclusions: If you turn off the ignition, exit the car and lock it, the 12V sockets shut off around 3 minutes. If you don't lock the car, the 12V sockets remain powered for at least 5 minutes.

You inspired the engineering gene inside me.

I timed it after locking my car and got the same result - the auto-off of the outlets was about 3 minutes. So that is consistent.

In summary, the power will be cut automatically:
  • After lock, the power is cut in 3 minutes
  • Without locking, the power is cut in 12 minutes

Yup, engineers don't like inconsistency! Everything must be repeatable!

The above experiment(s) did not prove to be true in my case.. Ran the same tests, with same variables and the result was my unit stayed on for over 10,20,30+ minutes. I said the hell with it, and did the mirror tap. Took all of 10 minutes and there are no more unwanted power drains that I'm unaware of.

Thank god there are quality forums for help!
