What does this icon mean

I would get this randomly after I took delivery of my '18 m3, but for the last 2 weeks it has been on solid. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

To rearrange the tiles on the home screen. Or you just press the Menu button on iDrive controller when already on the home screen.

How do I get out of that mode? I thought it had something to do with an update. I was way off.

Press the "Back" button.

I'll give it a shot thanks. For some reason it just stays on that mode while carplay is active. Hitting back I assume would just take me away from my current screen.

When you mentioned CarPlay (which I don't have), I checked again. That icon does not appear in the screen to rearrange the main menu tiles, so I'm thinking it must have something to do with the CarPlay screen.
