Rust on newly purchased OEM Airbags

I purchased a brand new OEM F8x Steering Wheel Airbag from a legit BMW Dealer.

Sealed in box, typical inside. All stickers as expected.

But there appears to be rust (or oxidation) on the actual inflator.

Of course it’s Takata

I’m sure 99.999% of forum members have never seen the back of their steering wheel airbag, but should there be this discoloration on the inflator?

Since it's Takata - That sucks bc I'm assuming we're all going to be part of the recall sooner or later then.

Also, shouldn't you just take it back to the dealer and ask for a different one? Is there a newer part number for the airbag?

No. These were not subject to the recalls.

EDIT: Well, appears there is a new/changed Airbag number as of less than a week ago.

I think you should actually email corporate to validate. I wouldn't necessarily take the word of the parts guy behind the counter. It could be nothing/normal, but I would make double sure since it's a safety issue.

Full disclosure, it was purchased in November and sitting in my garaged (which has AC), unopened until I got around to installing this week.

Did not take it out of plastic covering in box until now.

Nothing else in my garage is rusting....and outside in a non-climate controlled environment where a car drives or parks at locations is certainly less climate friendly than my garage.

Again, as noted, I suspect 99.999% of owners have never seen the rear of their steering wheel airbag.

Wondering if the 0.001% that have, have they seen anything like this?

What is the source of that data. The first M4 across the line was February 2014, so how could the M4 dates be right, for example? And the first F8X models were called MY2015 not MY2014. Is that data reliable?

https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls?gclid=...SAAEgLGq_D_BwE

I entered my VIN into the link above and it said there were zero recalls for my car. Since that is from NHTSA, I am comfortable with that.

As the VIN number shows that there is no recall, that confirms my post. There are no recalls on this model Airbag.

Not sure what you are questioning?

I was questioning the data sheet that you posted and misunderstood the purpose of the chart. Seemed to be implying that there was an airbag recall for all of those listed.

I think that chart shows where the purchased airbag is used, validating that it is the current airbag part number for OP’s vehicle.

I would also mention that the F3x MSport Airbag which is identical except for a plastic Sensatec covering was also replaced by a new number on 3/01/2018.

Whether these are from a new manufacturer, something to do with the Takata Bankruptcy Filings or something totally unrelated is unknown and would be purely speculation at this point.

I had my Airbag out a few times to work on the Steering wheel, but it certainly didn't look like that. No rust whatsoever.

Pause this video at 2:07 you can clearly see no corrosion. I would have remembered it.

Take it back to the dealer.

It looks like that part was rusted before the air bag was assembled, since the yellow stickers are on top of the rust. Parts sitting in a parts bin getting rusty from humidity ....

I find it interesting both mine and this eBay Airbag both came from a Southern California Dealership....(where the humidity is supposedly low).

Interesting enough, here is rear from 5 year old airbag from car in Florida.

The humidity was just a possible example. My main point is that it was rusted before the yellow stickers were attached.
