M4 Making a dull pinging sound

I have a 2016 M4 DCT competition package ,,bought in April,, it's got 1900 miles ,,did the break in right.. per, BMW.

When the is cold the car is making a very dull pinging noise, when the car is under a light load on the gas , about 3000 RPMs higher gears.. It's a real fast dull ping ping does not change with RPMs just comes on with a light load on the gas then goes away about 4000 RPMs .. You can get it to come and go if you just put it in third gear modulate the gas between 3000 and 4000 RPM , it almost sounds like some sort of harmonics going on ....Sounds like it's coming for deep in the engine or center of the fire wall..

When the car is up to temp,, it goes away,, car runs, fine pulls hard, shift fine.

The dealer in KC are scratching their heads they have a specialist coming from Chicago to drive the car and see if it's coming from the drivetrain

Has anybody heard of this problem in there in M cars..

Thanks

Most likely not detonation given what you said, but what fuel are you using? Octane?

It is not unheard of to have more chatter from your valve train when it is cold and then it goes away when warmed up. Does it happen after car is completely warmed up?

The dealer doesn't think it's valvetrain related and I use premium gas in it .. The dealers thinking more drivetrain related but they don't know..

If you are unhappy with the car tell them. BMW is great with offering trade assists if they know or suspect an issue with the car. No argument, they just bend over backwards to make you happy.

That's good to know,, it's my first BMW,, and if it's the drivetrain, with less that 2000 miles on it's not going to be good...

Maybe it's not "ping" but "bing"?

Sorry, I know, not helping, but if you don't have lights no worries: you're covered under warranty. Worse case, put a rock on the accelerator and point it toward the nearest cliff.

Update,,, Not Good

Well a update after looking over the car for several days BMW finally had a tech rep come in and they found the problem. The car has 1900 miles they drained the rear diff and said it was like molasses and it had metal shavings.. They did the required 1200 mile break in and they change the rear diff then and said that the rear diff fluid was normal.

BMW ordered a new rear diff..

BMW said there's a service bulletin on these rear ends but my Vin number was not on that service bulletin but BMW is going to cover it,,,and said that they'll be updating the Vin numbers now. I will get the service bulletin number and pass it on..

I'm bummed out.. I never even drove the car that hard... just normal stuff.. it's the DCT transmission..

Well a update,, BMW called me today and said the rear diff will take three weeks,
Here is the kicker,, they said they talk to BMW tech rep and he said put new fluid in it let the customer have the car back to to drive the car as he wants to and will put a new diff in it when it gets here..

Does that sound odd to you guys they would let me have the car back knowing that the rear end is making metal? By the way it is a leased car.

Customers whose cars were included in the rear differential recall were allowed to take delivery of their cars upon signing the disclosure form. I am one of the customers whose car is included in the recall. I am still waiting for the new rear differential.
