Heh, that's quite expected actually. Yes, the front wheels are constantly throwing road debris all over the body of the car, particularly the places you noted. Thats why my first week owning the car, and my previous car, I immediately scheduled an appt with my local XPel paint protection film shop and got nearly the entire car covered except the roof and trunk. It cost me about $3500 or so, (I think), and worth every penny. The car looks literally brand new. My last car had it for 3 years before it traded it, and it too looked literally brand new. My rear quarter panel is showing some pings in the coating, but I'll just have them remove and reapply that portion when I think it needs it. The paint is still perfect. I'll put up picks sometime. The product is XPel Ultimate. I will never own another car without it. Just amazing stuff. |

What about the area behind (not in front) of the rear tires? I know that the XPEL rocker panel kit includes a narrow 2 inch wide strip that goes right behind the rear wheels. Is that coverage sufficient to protect the rear bumper from rock chips? Or do you need extra coverage (i.e., specially cut xpel film).
BTW, I had the rocker panel kit installed on my M3 and asked the installer to cut a larger piece to cover the area in front of the rear wheels. But now I am thinking i should have them to do a special larger piece behind the rear tires. Last edited by AtlantisF80; 12-24-2016 at 05:57 PM.. |

My Mineral Grey F80 has the same problem as the OP. The primer is a noticeably lighter color than the paint, so every little chip is obvious. I've done clear bra on the entire front bumper, hood, mirrors, rockers, and added custom-cut strips just behind the wheels at all four corners, and to the lower edges of the doors to minimize the shotgun blast effects. I also added pieces of 3M clear bra just above the rear wheel arches where I noticed the damage at first. I'm at 16K miles now and it won't get much worse, but it all stems from the way the fenders and rear bumper curve in behind the wheels, as well as the sticky nature of the tires -- they just throw a lot of stones.
I'd love to get a set of subtle mudflaps to cure the problem, but that's not the most aesthetically appealing solution. |

Same issue here BSM F80. For those that say the pitting is normal or its a given due to the wide fender flares, its not. This didnt happen in my e92 M3 or my Z3, both of which had wide fenders.
BMW put a piece of clear protection in this specific area because they know of this problem. Its the only place they put paint protection . However they didnt cover enough area.... |

its normal from the angles of the car.
its also normal for the roads you drive on...freeway, mountain, streets, by the ocean, etc. Only way to prevent it is to not drive, or clear bra it. its not a design flaw in the car as previously mentioned. |

When I had PPF installed I asked for larger area on the rear arch, but just noticed 8 months later that it still has the stock piece on it. lol Luckily no spots yet until I get a larger piece installed.

No dealer will do anything about it. That's the design of the car. It has huge flares, they will catch all sorts of debris. I'm sure the 1M was similar and the Z3 M also.

Check out these to fit the rear wheel arch to stop chips.

Curious, do people that have PPF on the entire car or at least the extended protection kits still have issues with nicks in the film?
I understand that PPF will "self-heal," but I would think that's only to a certain degree. Obviously the film will protect from paint chips, but if the film itself is going to get beat up to the point it can't self-heal, I would think it would eventually deteriorate to the point that it starts to peal or look just as bad as a bunch of nicks in the clear coat, without the option to correct them a little with a compound. I have 3 paint chips on my car (2 on my hood, one on the front bumper), I was able to touch up all 3 to a satisfactory degree, I would say that my factory 3M film looks worse than than those touch-ups, and also worse than the area immediately around it. I could likely correct the area around it to a satisfactory finish, but I would have to replace the film. This would be a lot more costly if I had to replace an entire panel of film, and it will continue to happen over and over again, so what's the point? Personally, I would rather the surface I interact with daily to be pristine and I haven't seen a film, wrap, or tint job in person that I would be satisfied with. The nicks are inevitable in my area, but the actual paint chips are rare, so it's more of an insurance policy which I'll continue to have to pay for/replace to keep my car's finish okay under that film, and I hate the idea of any insurance.

i'd rather have nicks in the PPF than have damage on the car itself. You can always replace the film. I had mine redone at the rear door and the entire rear flare. Then tapers at the back of the flare. I also replaced the factory PPF.
