Rock stuck in heat shield not under warranty

I had a rattling and scraping sound from my rear driver side under low speed, braking and cruising. I read and researched about this problem and it all points to rocks getting stuck in brake heat shield. So I took it in to the dealer and had them look at it and they called me back 5 hours later and said it is indeed a rock is stuck in there but it is not under warranty. They want $120 for it .
Did anyone else experience this? Did the dealer charge you? Seems like a design flaw that problems like this happen so easily and often.

That's ridiculous! Take a long screwdriver and press against the shield. The pebble will fall to the ground on it's own. Now send a $100 check to me. Just solved your issue and saved you $20!

There was a service bulletin about this. They even came up wth a fix for this if I remember correctly. How is this not covered under warranty???

There is a replacement shield. The design was changed. I would push to have it changed under warranty.

+1 to all the above. No way this isn't warranty.

The heat shield fix involved a pretty significant tear down to get to the heat shield and replace it.

This happens about 2 times a year on my car (I live off a long dirt driveway) and I just stop and reach the back brake heat shields on the bottom and away falls the rock.

I spoke to my mechanic the other night and he said that the newest backing plate is a completely new design. He said that they do the replacements all the time under warranty. It's a pretty extensive job though and takes most of the day to do both.

Most of the day? Damn. I'm guessing it's a one piece unit that requires pulling the hub to remove.

Yup, he said that they needed to pull the hub.
