Totally different cars. Shouldn't be a difficult decision.
And M4 |

I chose an '18 M3 (awaiting delivery in several weeks) over the M550i and several other cars. If you like driving, then the M4 will be the better choice. It is just way more engaging. This has nothing to do with speed itself. Arguably, on regular roads which are often a bit slick and at legal speeds, the M550i will be faster due to the awd. That engine really is a torque monster. There will be no comparison, though, at higher speeds and in the twisties. The M4 will rule. And it will put a much bigger smile on your face. It offers more feedback, more sound, more thrill. The M550i isolates; the M4 engages. That is the difference.

Depends on my commute/needs. If I'm droning on the highway or sitting in traffic or driving on city streets, the 5 all day. If it's a fun car, or my commute is back roads and wide open stuff, M car or used M5.

'15 f80 with full coilovers, nt01 tires and pure turbos with support mods
New 18 and used 15 are mostly the same car and all the updates on the 18 are superseded by the aftermarket anyway so why pay more for new unless you are doing euro delivery Between those 2 choices, m4 all the way. If you want a "m" 5 series step up to the plate and get the m5 It's like getting a "m"240 vs an m2 or a 340 "m" vs m3. Why would you do that? |

I chose an 18’ M3.
M550i as others have said is just not engaging enough. Plus, you can’t toss it around as much as the M3. The 5 series has many creature comforts but the M3 is just so much more fun to drive. |

http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1346661 The 2015 M3/M4 could not be more different than the 2018 M3/M4 CP. And these are comments from people who have owned both and/or own both. So I don't think the 18 and 15 are the same car.

I ordered a 2018 M3 CP because I loved the original car and wanted to switch things up a little. I test drove the new car, and they are marginally different. I couldn't feel the difference in power on the street. I couldn't feel the suspension difference either. I did see a difference in a few sound and interior details. They have a few differences (mostly aesthetics) but I strongly disagree on the comment that they are completely different cars, they are pretty close in every sense. That is, of course, my personal opinion. |

BTW, the 2018 makes less torque down low - so you won't feel any power difference - in fact the 2018 could feel slower.

It is a nice highway cruiser and looks like a great daily driver with more space than a 3 series. Not everyone needs the performance of an M3/4 or the ride / noise that comes with it.

Just my $0.02, pick a few forum members who appear to have the same usage pattern and previous car history and preferences as you and focus on those You could also look at the part number threads that concretely outline the changes. My understanding is that the '15 to '18 cp changes that impact performance are in the springs/dampers/sway bars, wheels, and mild engine tune (lesser low end torque and more torque higher in rev range). Hence, my suggestion that a '15 with the mods I suggested will supercede the '18 cp for a lot less money Oh, there's also the steel instead of CF driveshaft in the newer car, but havent seen definitive tech this makes a difference. It was such a big deal in the market of the '15 but who knows. |
