Great review.
I always enjoy EverydayDriver. If you haven't watched it already, their film on the M3 generations "Icon" was very good.

Good video. Nice sound track. Nice to see a review of the Alfa where it didn't break down! Now, about the shift paddles - who likes them on the wheel vs on the steering column? Seems like two very different approaches. My hands are usually at the three and nine o'clock positions or slightly higher so the paddles are always in the same place for me. Any thoughts?

I find it is better to have the paddles mounted on the steering wheel for track driving as the hands (almost) always stay in the same position (as they should). Paddles mounted on the column can be more convenient for street driving since more shuffling is needed, particularly for city driving. I find myself mostly using the DCT shift lever during city driving because of this.

One important benefit of DCT is the ability to shift mid corner without upsetting the car.

I love these guys. Used to watch them, and a few others. Really only respect their opinion of all the YouTube Car Reviewers. They seem articulate, knowledgeable and straight forward. Used to be big into TFL but they're trash.

Column mounted shifters might require you to reach further to activate them as they are further from the wheel typically, but always in the same position. I find myself using the console shifter when in a turn, I would probably do that still with column shifters in everyday situations not on a track or on a mountain road.

Ugh...I'm currently debating M2 vs M3 comp for my next car. When I got my 235 I extensively drove the M3/4 and just couldn't get over the lack of connection with the road. Every time the 235 put a bigger smile on my face. Now with the comp package it seems to of fixed some of that feeling. But this video along with others makes it out to be just 90% there. I'm thinking I should be looking at M2 VS The Alfa. Then again any BMW is going to be more reliable then the Alfa
The M2 is just about driving perfection so it's making this choice tough. If only the M2 had the residuals of the M3 this would be a no brainer choice... Not knocking the M3/4 they are beastly Cars and are far from boring, it's just the connection I want with the road. Maybe I'm splitting hairs here. I haven't drivin the M3 with comp pack yet so maybe this will help. |
