All quiet on the western front.

4 days since since repair and not a single sound...yet. And they appear not to have damaged or broken anything else!

It used to be a small annoyance now it's straight embarrassing. Sounds like my wheel is falling off. I guess it's time to take it in.

I checked with my dealer to get it taken care of along with a handful of other items. They "couldn't duplicate", but I didn't have the time to stick around and argue it out. Will have to bring it back, maybe get a recording of the sound or just point to the service bulletin on it.

Thanks for sharing. I shared the SB with my advisor and he called me back stating they are ordering the replacement parts. Mines been making the noise for a week straight now so hopefully this fixes it.

After almost a year of driving, this finally happened to me. Sounded like I was dragging the muffler on the ground. Sound went away after awhile. I'll be requesting the shield upgrade at my next service.

FirstF80Inspace, I know there is a lot of pages to this post and of course I don't expect you to read all of it. So I'll repeat. There are two different and distinct sounds coming from the M3. One is a grinding noise that occurs usually when turning left or right. a big SCREEEEEEECH until it pops out. That noise is your rock stuck in the brake shields. Then there is the tin can or muffler scraping noise that has nothing to do with the brake shields. Your noise has nothing to do with brake shields. When I had my M3 I got the muffler scraping against the ground (tin can noise) only once so I never really pursued that problem. The SCREEEEEEECH sound I was getting daily. There is a bulletin for the brake shield problem.

It was definitely a rock stuck in the brake shield. I was pressing the shield with a screw driver and three tiny little pebbles fell out. I haven't had any sound since.

I also tapped the shield with my screwdriver and the pitch of the sound was the same as when my car was making that noise.

I got my shields replaced under warranty two weeks ago and no noise since. Fingers crossed that did it.

This summer I had to pull a rear wheel to get a rock out, it was stuck for 15 miles. Ive had them replaced once. Next time in, will make sure there is not a further revised design, as Ive lost track of how many versions there have been.

exactly ...takes longer to go to the dealer etc. Just do this and be done with it.

I took my car road racing and as the brakes heated up the shields would rub more. The very inside by the emergency brake pads touch I put mini pry bar and the sound never came back.

My 15 made the tin can noise all the time. The first time it happened I thought I ran over a trash bag full of cans or something. My 17 has never made the noise once.

I had this problem a lot. It would do it almost everytime I drove the car. Took it to the dealer, they replaced the rear brake shield, and issue has not come back since.

I think I just had this happen to my 2018. Production date in September. Happened on a back road and was looking for a place to pull over but after a few curves the rock dislodged itself and noise went away.

I finally caved and took my car to the dealership yesterday after several weeks of intermittent noise from my right rear wheel and trying every solution out there. Of course, the dealership couldn't replicate the sound.

Fortunately, the SA said he was familiar with the problem from the E90 M3s and they could take everything off to clean up any debris buildup. I mentioned I had read there was a service bulletin for the shields, but he said that didn't apply to the F80s.

After that, my SA did some digging and found out my car did in fact fall within the production dates of the service bulletin (March 2016 production). Apparently the new brake shields only fit on a new wheel bearing design though, and it takes 5 days for the parts to come in.
