If making a choice between the two, the BMC quality is much better.

How often should they be regenerated, under normal driving conditions? I have nearly 8k miles on mine now...

Filter doesn't need to be spotless, just shake out the loose dirt every oil change, with recharging every other change.

For those that see a bit more dust, adjust to clean a bit more frequently.

Sorry in advance for the dumb question but I'm slightly confused - there is an air filter (orange) and charcoal filter (gray) in each airbox?

The other side trim covering the brace is able to lift up which gives you leeway to pull it through the gap.

Great right up and really helped me
Agreed, I also got it thru without pulling that rivet (step 5).

Did everyone pull the charcoal filter?

What is the charcoal filter for that the air filter doesn't catch?

Just did this only took 30mins. Step 5,12,and 13 are not 100% needed. Just makes it extra clearance. Great write up

tom @ eas hey tom so im considering the BMC drop in filters... Its been quite some time since theyve been out and i had a couple questions
1- are these the best drop in filter available? (In terms of performance and sound)
2- would a cold air intake be substantially better?
My plan is to run JB4 stage 1... My car has an M Performance exhaust and i want to add an intake with the tune

Most intakes on the market are pure marketing and will provide little to no gains, BMW generally does very well on on the induction end of M models.

K&N is generally cheaper, but BMC has a much higher build quality with little to no exposed wicking to maximize surface area. Given the choice, I would go BMC every time.

So in theory, adding JB4 stage 1 with OEM filter setup VS. BMC, little to no gains? How about for sound?

You'll definitely hear an increase on sound, typically from the combination of removing the charcoal liners and higher flowing filters.

Just did this, as I am not sure what intake I want yet if at all. Even with the stock filters taking out the charcoal filters the car has more sound to it.

Ok, so I don't know anything about the S55, but does it use EGR? If so, couldn't the Carbon filters be there to avoid carbon coking on the intake side of the engine?

No flaming; as I said, I know nothing!

Just emissions.

Replace the filters and enjoy the same gains as ~$2000 carbon intakes out there!

FYI: Did the charcoal filter delete a week ago, and didn't notice much more turbo spool sound.

Installed the BMC filters yesterday, and definitely a much more noticeable "woosh". Pretty cool. So certainly something is breathing better.
