My understanding is that coding is primarily responsible for the ZCP burbles and GTS-like start up roar. Not hard to extrapolate that into being part of the reason why a ZCP sports exhaust sounds "different" on a civic M3/4.

I think it's an inside joke, I am not really sure - I just have seen the distinction referenced that way.

Side note... why in the world does everyone shoot videos with the valves closed; who really cares how quiet the exhaust sounds?! I've yet to hear a system running valves closed that sounds good, let alone most ppl on here seem to either pull the plugs, or use a valve controller keeping them open 100% of the time. |

It dates back from the E9X days, when the CP was released and became the "thing to have", where plebian non-CP M3 were no better than Honda Civics. Pretty much the same debate happened with the F8X, hence why the inside tag stuck.

I think so too. Coding the valve logic in the muffler.

I had the zcp exhaust installed on my non-zcp 2018 M3 two months ago, and I can second the fact that it does indeed sound deeper and not louder. In fact, I think my car may have even gotten quieter. Nevertheless, I feel like it fixes the sound issues that the stock exhaust had such as that dreaded rasp sound at high rpms, so I’m glad I changed it. I also like that the tips are a nice black chrome to match my wheels. I did get the exhaust for free, however, and if I had to pay for it I probably wouldn’t drop the money.

The ZCP with an AA midpipe sounds as good as the MPE imo.
If I had a non comp car, I would definitely upgrade the exhaust to a ZCP and if out of warranty, tune with an AA midpipe. Much cheaper option than the MPE. I've got a brand new ZCP exhaust sitting in my garage and can't believe I haven't moved it yet. And to the OP - louder doesn't necessarily mean better. |

The easiest way to get a non ZCP to sound good is to get a tune and get burbles turned on. Spending the money and effort to swap to a ZCP muffler yields minimal results.
All you'd really be paying for is some perforations and black tips.

Exhaust Purchase Steps. 1. Valve controller not good enough... 2. AA midpipe not good enough... 3. full catback not good enough... 4. tune if your not zcp not good enough... 5. downpipes or just buy the whole catback from day 1 like many eager customers on this fourm |

Understand your reasoning. But 8.5K for a cracking exhaust is criminal. I think in retrospect if I was tuning, AA midpipe and ZCP would have been a better option. The MPE is just way over priced for a crack prone exhaust. I have the burger tuning obd module and just have the flaps permanently open. |
