While at the dealer today, car was in their reception bay (indoors). Car was warmed up on my way in so no cold start.
Tech started it up and that growl had me grinning... sounds awesome. Had all the SA's in the bay area turned their heads. Wished they popped that puppy into Sport or Sport+ first before the startup, maybe the heads indoors would also be turning |

Only have a first impression once...
Just got my MPE installed this weekend and thought I would give some initial perception before the burn-in and before I've learned to live with it.
I come from an E92 world with my V8, and have had various classic cars and still have a '61 corvette with a ZZ4 with manifolds and 400+hp. So part of me was hoping that i would get some of that grumble back in my garage. From my amateur senses I will echo a lot of what has been said. The best part of MPE experience is all the nuances that you get throughout a drive. You hear the pops, you hear the downshifts, you hear the overrun, you hear the rev-matching and you 'feel' the sound more. All things that you absolutely don't hear with the stock exhaust although I feel like the timbre of the exhaust is higher than the stock exhaust (i.e. less rumble), but volume is not close. The cold startup in the garage is still loud and annoying to some extent, even with the values opened (permanently). My wife says she can hear and 'feel' the car from the other side of the house in the morning. Once it warms up, it is as quite at idle at before. So for anyone that thought they would get that V8 rumble at idle - don't... Even at speed it will sound more like a formula 1 race car than a muscle car. I've read that the sound will change over the next 1500 miles so we'll see what my thoughts are then. Overall I'm happy with it primarily bc of all the engine sounds the stock exhaust dropped on the floor. When I picked it up the BMW tech called me over to show me a before and after video bc it impressed him that much. He says that most of the exhaust changes he does are 'meh'. This one made a real difference to him. They had me rev it in the garage to show everyone. |

Dumb question...but when/if these crack...how do you tell? Does the sound noticeably change and become embarrassing to drive until you get it fixed? Or is it something that you need to visually inspect every now and then?
Has anyone looked at all the reports of cracked exhausts and seen if they correlate to weather, different parts of the country, etc? |

This thread has me convinced to ask my SA for a quote for an MPE. I've been on the fence for too long and looked at many other alternatives, but keep coming back to the MPE. I just need to keep my wife from knowing how much it will cost.

Dealer Charge
You can look on shopbwmusa.com if you select your car, your dealer you can get the exact price they will charge - installed. You can even look at other dealers around the country and get what they will charge. I used that to negotiate a little with my local place. You should be able to get out the door less than 5k installed without tax. (reminder that tips are not included)

Second impressions
So, love the sound and feeling of the new MPE with the value controller disconnected. It is absolutely awesome!
One minor problem - The cold start on really cold mornings... These are the texts I got the first couple mornings from my wife as I'm driving to work. - OMG!! - Did you drive out the northside of the neighborhood to get coffee, bc I heard you drive all the way there! - The walls are shaking!! - Remember that guy with the Harley? - Now you are THAT GUY Reconnected the value controller for now so that I can get out of the neighborhood in the mornings without scaring small children. Ordered the canflap controller so that I can switch to full open values on demand - we shall see. |

Congrats on your MPE exhaust ~!!!
Since your car is the latest build year, I assume your MPE does not carry the design flaws which is "Cracking" .

I am not aware of any design changes, but if you search the forums you will see posts from a few months ago about cracked exhausts. Hard to tell if this is a super prevalent issue or just an effect of enthusiasts all coming to vent their frustrations in one place so we get a skewed sample size.

Whoa... Freaked me out - had to get up early this morning and run outside to look under my car. *whew* Yeah, nothing like that. One of the benefits (I thought) of getting the MPE was that it had to be installed by BMW and would warrantied with them. Is that your situation? How long before this showed up?

Don't want to be a thread jacker but ~ Yeah officially BMW did not change the
part number for the MPE, however, it was really common and anyone with this defect will get a warranty fix. My SA told me after the warranty fix ~ he told me zero customers showed up. So BMW must have done something ~
