Does anyone know if these do/will exist and if they would even fit given the very limited clearance near the muffler? I know this might be considered sacrilegious, but I need something to carry bikes and it is still unclear if the CF roof can be modified to have the threaded studs installed.

Any help is appreciated.

I am unaware of this being an option given the location and setup of the muffler.

However, I believe one f80/f82 owner so far has used the roof-mounted suction-cup rack to take a bike with no problems. Quite a good system, though I think most people have trust issues with suction

You, Go! You, Go! You, Go!

Just kidding. I don't know the answer, but I will tell you that the rear-view camera does have a "hitch zoom" function. Probably a generic iDrive feature though.

Dissemble your bike and put it in the trunk w/ seats down if necessary.

This is difficult with two or more bikes. Even the one bike I plan to transport is a 29er with a 12mm threaded axle. It isn't a quick release and would take some time to disassemble and reassemble.

I also do not trust the suction cups and do not want to put rack feet on the paint. Ideally someone figures out how to get the threaded inserts to work via a dealer install or something, but I figured investigating the hitch mount is another option too.

Not only is a tow hitch NOT sacrilegious, it's completely internally consistent with the ///M philosophy of "do it all" high performance vehicles. The M3/M4 with a tow hitch and small wheel/tires/tools trailer would be the perfect track day setup.

Case in point: On several trips to the Nurburgring I've seen M3s and 911s with tow hitches and trailers carrying track day supplies. I've only been a few times, but I'd be willing to bet this isn't an uncommon sight.

You should ask your local UHaul if they have any hitch products for BMW Sedans, namely the M3.

I agree that uhaul has hitches but having seen first hand a few of their installs I would probably do it myself.

I used to track my G35 coupe, and did the same thing; small trailer with wheels/tires and track day supplies. Worked great.

Would love to do the same thing with my M, but based on the muffler, not sure it is going to be possible. If it is possible, I will install a hitch in a heartbeat.

I have the invisihitch on my F31 and it's great. You can just take the end of the hitch off if you don't need it, and no one would know there was a hitch installed.

Hitch would be so cool, not only for a bike rack but a single axle motorcycle trailer. Or drop it to the ground on 21's until it's useless except as a fashion accessory.

You might try the company mentioned near the end of this thread:

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145306

I don't know if anyone ever tried it, nor whether they have or plan to have a product for the F8x. I don't think I've ever seen pics of a E9x M3 with a hitch installed.

Would like the trailer hitch too if that ever becomes an option.

+2 on this...

I'm planning to get one of these for my F30.

I gave in and bought the invisihitch mount for the F30 at risk. I installed it a few weeks back and had no real issues with the install. Pretty much all of the steps are identical to the F30.

There is a secondary portion/piece of the heatshield which could likely be cut (they have instructions on hot to cut the F30 heatshield) but removing it seemed to work just as well, and I am not too worried about the exhaust temps in that particular area as the hitch does provide a little extra protection. I have been keeping an eye on it and have not noticed any issues. It does eliminate two of the four bolted mounts on the bottom of the diffuser, which has the potential to make that portion flop around, but again, I have not really noticed any problems. I left the bolts in so the bumper connects to the diffuser, but neither connect to the heatshield any longer.

As you can see in the video, the hitch insert does move the diffuser up slightly, but only touches a small portion which isn't visible from the back of the car at all (I am sure a small piece of xpel or PPF would prevent damage). I am not sure that this would work with any of the carbon fiber rear diffusers though. I imagine it likely won't work.

Looks great. Do you have a link to purchase the mounting system? I'm in need to haul some bikes occasionally.

Thanks.

Buy at your own risk. Technically designed for the F30 but works as I described above.

It says bike rack only. Do you think this thing would be strong enough to pull some of those small track day trailers with a tire rack and tool box on them?

There is a regular hitch mount too, but I am not sure what the difference is.

That's a very cool product by a company called Execuhitch.

It does fit F30's and bolts to factory rear bumper enchantment points. Looks like a solid solution for those cars.
I just called them, and they claim it does not F80/F82's properly: the clearance between the muffler and the hitch carrier is just too tight for their hitch ball attachment mechanism.

The nicely illustrated post above show how F30 kit can be installed on F80 for bike-rack duty (with minor lower bumper interference). Just watch your fingers if you do it while the muffler is hot! At least that much is good news for the bikers!
