Video: Our Ride in the M4 Where Bruno Spengler Talks EPS, Turbos and Transmission
BIMMERPOST NEWS Video: Our Ride in the M4 Where Bruno Spengler Talks EPS, Turbos and Transmission We've shared with you the M3/M4 official specs and our ride-along/workshop notes, now have an on board look as we ride with Bruno Spengler in the M4 prototype at BMW's proving grounds near Munich. Bruno shares his thoughts on the EPS (electric power steering), turbos, transmission and testing on the Nurburgring. And if you're wondering whether the in-cabin sounds you hear are artificially enhanced via Active Sound, we asked and were told by one of the BMW engineers that there was absolutely no artificial sound feature. But, other outlets have written that the M3/M4 will use the speakers to amplify the sound, so we have contradictory info. A request for clarification is in at BMW and we should have an answer soon. And in case you missed it, here's a video featuring Bruno Spengler and Timo Glock testing the M3/M4 on the Nurburgring. |

Can anyone tell at what point he shifts when he guns it?
Its obvious he's shifting around 5-6k as he leisurely drives around the course, but on that one shot it looks as if his tach just touches 8k or surpasses it but just a tad. Will there be a shift light on the M3/4?

The M3/4 power plant has turned out to be fairly conventional after rumors of V6 or electric superchargers. That's good. It might not sound like a NA V-8 but it will go like hell.

It sounds nice and seems to drive well in the video. Although I may keep my V8 for the time being, I just can't wait to see and drive this M car in person. It's going to be a whole new experience.

Assuming active noise is present, I don't get all the fuss.
I can understand if they were using a pre-recorded sound file, but if they're routing the actual engine noise from the front of the car, then it would be no different than say, having a thinner firewall. Amplifying existing sound is what Active sound is correct? It isn't re-playing a recorded file right? |

It is, unfortunately. Assuming it's the same technology used on the M5/M6.
Still waiting to hear from BMW for confirmation whether the M3/M4 has this.

That REALLY sounds good from the inside
With todays strict noise regulations, audio enhancement in the cabin is somewhat difficult to avoid because of need of sound proofing engine bay etc. If what we hear is the engines note, just enhanced by speakers I would be OK with that. It's not like in the M5 where it is a digitally made sound. The M550d has audio enhancement, and it really sounds good on the inside (and that's a diesel). |

But from the reports it seems to be similar to the M550d and NOT the M5/M6. Meaning that it's NOT a pre recorded sound, but the actual sound (as it happens) amplified via the speakers. |

I don't understand why BMW wouldn't put this "amazing" electronic steering setup on all of their cars. Why numb and dumb it down in the non-M cars when all of the reviewers keep complaining about it?
Hopefully it has just been recently developed (reason why its not on the m5/m6) and will find its way into all of the cars with electronic steering.

Lots of encouraging news. Although it must be taken with a grain of salt. There's no way Bruno would give any negative thoughts he may hold. It's also likely that the points he discussed had been polished and given to him.
