Pressing start button twice to shut down car

I don't remember having to do this on my e92, but is it really necessary to have to press the start button twice to completely shut down the car? It's kind of annoying.

If you press it once, it'll shut off the engine. You can then get out of the car, and as soon as you lock it, it'll do the equivalent of pressing the button the second time (shutting down electronics such as radio, etc.)

Not for DCT cars. It will honk if you do this. You have to code it to turn off electronics once you open door and do a single push on the start button.

So I can code it to act like the e92. I needed to hear that. Thanks.

It'll only honk if you leave the car in N, if it's in gear, you'll be fine.

It will work with a DCT car if you leave it in gear when you turn it off instead of putting it in neutral first.

If you are like me and don't lock your car in your own garage just press the button twice. I prefer the Audi way, where electronics turn off after you hit the button once and open the door, but I got used to it. There is at least one other thread on this topic floating around somewhere.

what if you shut off the car by pressing and holding the start/stop button? In my 2008 550i that action shuts off engine and then turns off all electronics about 1 sec later

You can put the car in reverse and turn off.

Sometimes it will take you four pushes if you leave your foot on the brake on the second push of the button.

The bimmer engineers out engineered themselves on this one.

Yeah, my wife's 2011 335is Coupe works this way. Press and hold the start/stop button and the car shuts itself down. Or, you can press it twice. I couldn't understand why everyone with a F8x was complaining about pressing the button twice until I got my M4 and discovered it doesn't work the same way. You either have to press the button twice (take your foot off the brake for DCT for the second push or it will turn on again), or you press it once, exit the car and lock it.

It's so dumb... sometimes pushing twice doesn't turn the car off. One press should do it, period. I've decided in my garage where I leave the key in the car and don't lock it.... it gets one push to turn off the engine and fuck it... I walk away with the dash lit up and the stereo playing. If it ever goes dead I'll call the dealer and have them bring me a new battery. It's a lease and is under warranty and maintenance for the three years I own it.

The car shuts off after 10 minutes or so regardless.

It's kind of an odd feature for sure. I had an e60 M5 for 5 years so I got used to just a single push to kill everything. You get used to it over time though. It doesn't really bother me anymore - it's just become second nature.

I still have trouble understanding how people can have issue with this lol.

Do not leave DCT in neutral, leave it in gear (aka D/S or Reverse). Pull on your E-brakes. Then keep your foot down on the brake and just press Start/Stop.

That turns the engine off. The electronics might be on but once you exit the car and lock, it turns off.

This isn't that difficult to do. You don't need to code it. Even if you don't lock your car, the electronics will turn off on it's own after a few minutes or you can just press Start/Stop again to turn the electronics off first. No one can be THAT lazy to just press a button twice.

I completely agree. This ranks up there with no sync for climate control and how plain the Fob is. I'm just grateful that I get to drive this awesome machine.

This couldn't be any simpler. You stop the car, press the start/stop button once (goes into park), get out, lock it (shuts down electronics).
