I'll counter that the current gen 'verts actually look pretty good with the top down. The previous model i would say did not. Top up they do look odd.

The reason its a convertible is that this year is the 30th anniversary of the M3 convertible (1988 - 2018, as the press release mentions). Although the name changed to M4, they wanted to celebrate the form factor.

With the 30th anniversary M3 a couple years ago, they chose the sedan to celebrate the anniversary of the nameplate instead of choosing the coupe to celebrate the anniversary of the two-door form factor. As such, there will be no 30th anniversary M4 coupe.
