Looks like you are correct, 4.0 confirmed. Awesome news for those getting a GT4.

When the M2C rumors w/S55 started, I sold my 2017 M2 while the value was still solid. Moved into a 2018 M3 ZCP at a very good price. There is no comparison. It's not just the engine. The entire car is so much more refined - M2 feels like a parts bin car in comparison. If I tracked my car frequently, the M2 would be my choice. But it's not nearly as livable on a daily basis as the M3. So glad I was "forced" into looking at the M3. Thanks BMW!

I'm pretty sure the M6/M5 owners are saying the exact same thing about this forum.

I don't believe there is as much comparison to the M5/6 on this forum than there is to the M3/4 on the M2 forum. I think that is because there is less market overlap between the M5/6 and M3/4 markets than there is between the M3/4 and M2 market. IMO, there are very few folks that wished for an M5/6 and bought an M3/4 because it was less expensive.

I must say though, with the avenue of the M2C with the S55 and all the weight reduction M-Performance parts, the M2 is becoming very appealing (M-Performance parts finally carry their name where they actually offer a performance enhancement).

That's the problem for BMW, just as it is for Porsche. The m5 has a V8, the M3/4 a 6 banger, different beast. The M3/4 is not so different from the M2 (now), why pay more? Sure, it's prettier (aesthetically more pleasing) but the M2 will now, I expect, perform better and let's face it, except for the hideous rear end, it looks great! Porsche solved the cognitive dissonance problem of the 911/718 by putting a 4 banger into the 718 and reminding the loyalists that the 4 cyl. has a long and glorious historical thread to most Porsches... I think the M3/4 could go V8, which would conflict with the M5 and pollution targets, or put a 4 pot into the M2 next generation...... This theory comes from a recently developed, deep resentment fostered by the M2 getting our 'special' S55. Now I know how the Ford Mustang guys felt (around 2010 or so) when Ford put the Coyote engine into the 'new' GT models, the previous year's output was ~320 hp the Coyote over 400 (not sure about the numbers but Ford Mustang guys got really screwed).

I see the other side in that having the s55 in bmw's highest selling car (iirc m2 outsells all other m cars combined), will create more demand for better quality/cheaper aftermarket parts, which the tuners will respond with given the sheer market size

Just think of all those stock frames on eBay that would make an easy pure turbo core exchange, and maybe even a true flex solution finally

We may even see new tuners coming into the platform like cobb or apr

I am hearing (no pun intended) great things about the 718 GTS.
I got to give both a 6MT and PDK 718 Cayman GTS a very nice test drive last weekend. I liked the S a lot, but wow, the GTS is great. If you ask me, the turbo 4 still sounds much better than the S55 by good margin. It certainly handles better and just has so much tactile feel in the handling. On top of that, the Cayman is simply gorgeous, whereas the M2 Conpetition leaves much to be desired in looks and more so quality. Plus, the fact that the M2 Competiton gained nearly 130 lbs is just sad. The car was heavy enough as it was. It almost complete negates the extra power it got and unless they do something with boost, the car is going to be even more of a handful than the m3/4 with the shorter wheelbase.
I would certainly buy a 718 GTS. I wouldn’t say I want it more than my 991.2S or the 991.2 GTS I may be trading for, but I would take it any day over an M2/3/4.

They're not. They're probably too busy enjoying their cars.

I wonder what percentageof M5/M6 owners track their cars compared to percentage of M3/M4 owners.

My point is there is too much infighting here at Bimmerpost. The M2, M3, and M4 all serve their purposes for their respective price points. Nobody is being insecure (well, for the most part, hopefully), people are going to value what the M2 offers for its price vs the M3/M4 and its higher price point.

All three are excellent cars, and we are lucky as BMW fans to have the choice.

And yes, the M2C with all the M Perf options now available is enticing. But BMW will probably have something up their sleeve for the next M4 to the keep the all important gap between the two models. Nothing wrong with that and I am excited to see what they do.

M2 and M4 I think is where the model overlap is worst.

M3 has the iconic name and sedan shape

One model lineup gap I wish BMW M would fill is the all-out 2 seats light sports car. Maybe they have outsourced that to Toyota Supra in this generation.

I would be so down for a z4 sized car that's 2800lb with 350lb 4cyl with full coilovers, space for 305 wide tires all around, and aero in the same vein as viper acr

BMW will have it's own Z4 though, that Toyota is using to call a Supra. So it's coming. Hope it's called a Z5.

The last z4 (which I had for 3 yrs in n54 + dct + adaptive dampers version) was garbage as a sports car and the current one looks to be another fashion piece vert

Toyota has the fixed roof version, whose first public showing was in race car form (unlike Bmw, which showed off as a style statement)

I'm not holding my breath for a bmw sports car anyway, because m4 gts was not up to par against its similarly priced competitor, the 911 gt3

Not like I'm salty or anything for getting an e89 z435 instead of 987.2 cayman s

Interesting.

I know a guy with a Z3 M coupe(I know somewhat different animal) that said how awesome of a hooligan car it is. I would have thought the Z4 was more of the same.
