Buy first year M4?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Guys,

It's been my dream to ED an M4 and I was hoping to get on the first year delivery list. Until now, I didn't give much thought to the changes, tweaks, comp package, etc. that will probably be released 2016 onwards.

Would these changes be worth it to stall my purchase?

Philosophically, there will ALWAYS be better things out there.

Thoughts?

its a brand new M engine. its also a FI which means they can easily make some changes or adjustments if need be.

I wouldn't want the first year, BUT if i needed a new car i would get one. i would probs get second or 3rd year best case.

IMO there will always be something new and better that comes up in the future. BMW is here to make money so they will continue to evolve and continue to make their product better and better.

I am planning on getting one of the first M4's that come out and down the road i most likely get the newest thing then as well. I prob will never be satisfied lol

I've gotten the very first of the last two iterations (E46 & E92) and am happy with that choice. As you say, there is always something newer and better in the future, so it's never ending. It's cool having a distinctly new model for a while, and it will also look new for more years.

^^^ Agreed.

IF you are one of those guys who is into "keeping the car forever" than I would wait for 2nd or 3rd production models.

I will most likely order one when it becomes avail and get another one in 2-3 years after that.

I honestly don't care about 1st year as long as the car is under warranty.

Lease? maybe

Buy for holding for a few years? I'd never do that with BMW. Let other customers discover the first model year annoyances and serious problems.

I wouldn't be too worried about performance upgrades. With the F/I engine, increasing power output will be very easy and cost efficient. I'm willing to bet that whatever competition package that BMW tries selling will cost an arm and leg, when they do eventually. Things like updated navi etc. will always happen and is a fact of life really.

But as mentioned above, the primary reason to hold off on buying the first MY would be to avoid any issues that BMW misses.

I'll likely wait until the 2nd year simply to avoid the ridiculous mark-ups. If mark-ups weren't an issue, I'd be an early adopter myself.

Why wait? you might get hit by an meteorite tomorrow, admittedly this wouldn't help, as you still wouldn't have the car or it's eventual successor but you get the meaning.

Yep! It's not worth an extra $10k for me to have the car before everybody else (..that's throwing money away IMHO, and my pockets aren't deep enough to be cool with that). I can wait!

The YOLO philosophy is definitely alive and well in my life (..I live life, approach engaging experiences with vigor and spend graciously), but I'm not throwing money away unnecessarily just to hoot around on the forum because I'm the first one to have the car. I throw enough money away modding cars; I don't need to overpay to add insult to injury. Plus the 2nd year almost always includes more options, better colors, etc. for more or less the same retail/invoice price.

LED Tails and Comp Pack did not become avail until 2011....

Navi had nothing to do with M3 specifically. All BMWs got that upgrade across the board.

He has a 2008 E90, so LED tails were one year later (along with new iDrive, etc.) Correct about comp pack however he may have been also referencing the F10 M5 where the comp pack came out one year after launch (along with LCI changes.)

having first year is alsome no doubt about that. i would lease one in a heart beat, but i simply wont want a first year for long term ownership. i would at least want second year.

I love German cars (BMW, Audi, Porsche mostly), but I never plan on owning one outside of its warranty. With that being said, I will sell it or trade it in before the warranty runs out. I am a little nervous about the first year having glitches, but I am committed and if it gives me a problem then at least I have the warranty. Anyone can get a lemon at any time regardless of production year, but hopefully it will go smooth since this is not BMW's first rodeo with FI.

Isn't this more of an issue when someone just walks in off the lot and says they want that? If you have a dealership you have worked with in the past and they say, you won't have any markups, but you will have to pay MSRP, would that be acceptable to you?

That's my scenario and for me I am fine with that. I see my situation different than a new Mustang Cobra or Vette' stingray with a huge "market adjustment" on it as someone had mentioned. I also don't like to throw money away (who does?), but paying MSRP and getting the vehicle I want seems to be a good compromise for me. You could always wait, but then it will be whatever is new or coming down the line to counter whatever is already out. Something tells me we will be talking about the new AMG twin turbo V8 C class or something. Never ending cycle.

I have a stellar relationship with my dealer/Sales Director/Sales Manager (..10 BMW's purchased in 13 years....yes, I've run through that many BMW's in that short period of time, with 5 of those purchases being M3's. Hell, I purchased two in the last 5 months!!!!!!), but when allocations are small (..sayyyy, 1 or 2 for the store) and the product is red hot, you're not going to escape without a mark-up. Paying MSRP on the first M3's that arrive here would be a steal (..and I'd gladly go for that), but it is highly unlikely for a dealership in California to agree to that because they know that there are people willing to buy above MSRP. It has been like that with EVERY M car including the XM trucks, and it'll be the same with the F80.

And let me be clear....

...I'm not choosing to wait because I'm waiting for the next best thing. I just don't want to pay more than the car is actually worth.
