BIMMERPOST NEWS
How 11 BMW M Cars (Past and Present) Compared in Lightning Laps at VIR
38
COMMENTS

Through the years, BMW has provided a total of 11 M cars to Car and Driver for its annual Lightning Lap competition at Virginia International Raceway.

Notwithstanding size and weight increases throughout the years, lap times have dropped on newer models. Driving feel and enjoyment is of course harder to quantify and chart, however.

Clearly lap times have decreased over the years which is the same for most any track. Indeed, vehicles have gotten heavier and faster , particularly aided by multiple repaves of the circuit over time as well as the advancement of tire technology.

Imagine lap time variance if they reduced weight more drastically!

Who's idea was it to squish all that data into ONE graph?? My brain was hurting trying to figure out what was what. I couldn't figure out how the Z4 was the fastest for a minute there.

Folks need to take this data with a grain of salt. VIR has been re-paved through the years, and the drivers who are clocking the laps are journalists, not professional drivers.

My first thought after looking at the graph:
"Hmm.. what a strange ADVANCED graph... I must be terribly inexperienced with graphs"

Then reads the comment.

For some reason I thought M4 GTS weight around 3300 lbs.
All the diet was added back by wider rim, water injection, roll cage, and etc. Sport Auto weighed their GTS test car and it was only 14KG lighter than the M4 they tested.
