No WiFi hotspot in 2018?

Hi guys
Do any of you guys have a WiFi hotspot? My car doesn’t have it. My dealer says they don’t put them in the M3’s for some reason. Odd. Anyone?

Thanks
Alec

I don't have it, but only because it won't work in Dubai. There is an option you have to tick called WiFi Hotspot which the dealership here didn't allow me to tick but it can be ticked in other parts of the world. The point I am trying to make is, it's not standard, it has to be specifically ordered/added on the option list.

I think it's an option you have to add. But what's the benefit of having wifi? We all have smart phones with data. They prob work better then a wifi in a car.

It's a $500 option. Also not sure why anyone would want one.

Ah, ok thanks. I only want one when the kids start bitching about iPads not connecting. I’ll just keep telling them to look out the window. The real world is in true 3D and it’s ultra high definition.

This, this would've been an awesome feature 10 years ago. Not now when data plans are dirt cheap and everyone has one.

The some reason is that your dealer is an idiot -they don't know the options available for a car that they sell.

It comes as a bundle with wireless charging or I doubt most would ever select it.

Garage List
I have it in my 18' M3 but I haven't had time yet to play around with it.

I got it for the wireless charging for my S8 and X.

You can always go with a mobile hotspot like this one . Just make sure to get one that works with your service provider.
And if you want something even simpler than that, just enable the hotspot feature on your phone..
Either solutions works better and cost less than the $500 BMW feature.

Bumping this up.

Wireless charging (6NW) adds 6WD Wifi Hotspot to build. In the US, service is handled by AT&T via eSIM chip. It's across all 2018 M models.

Does anyone know how to change the carrier to T-Mobile?

Service is exclusive to att.

Right, the $500 option gets you the wireless charging, a second microphone, and while on the wireless charging dock, access to the external antenna for better reception, in addition to some mobile office features for Android (not yet available on iOS)... the wifi hotspot is just one part of this package, which you have to pay AT&T after the initial 3 month trial if you want to use it... I wouldn't get it for just that.. but the additional hardware features may help if you make a lot of calls from your car.

How is the wireless dock improving the phones reception? (I know that the physical cradle did in past BMW's). I was under the impression that the mobile LTE Hotspot used the vehicles external antenna as this is the main selling point for AT&T service. I also have this feature in my 2018 M4 vert, but have no inclination to activate.

For those of you that take delivery at your BMW center/dealership, is the Center activating the mobile hotspot trial at this time? The Performance Center is giving customers a sheet of paper with the vehicles phone number and AT&T website to activate (was process for my ED 2018 M4 vert). This will probably change once AT&T/BMW realize the low customer activation rate. I added this feature for the wireless charging knowing that Apple was adding this feature to the iPhone. Who can surf the internet if this beast is properly driven i.e. taking the turns hard?

To your first question, I don't have a technical answer for you... I did read this somewhere and the BMW Genius confirmed this to be the case... but trust that how you may... possible they're using some variation of the technology they used before in the physical cradle, or potentially this includes some kind of signal booster..

I'll take delivery of my F80 in January... will let you know how it plays out.

Wireless pad has an inductive antenna port. The personal cell antenna is located in the rear bumper. TCU cell antenna -regardless of hotspot or not- is located in the sharkfin.

Activation is via an AT&T website.

Is it possible to add WiFi Hotspot capability to our cars? Is it just a part that I can order from a BMW dealership?
