Oh yea, totally agree with you there. Some folks just want to maintain the ability to take corners at 80+ all year round. I usually use studless winters and they have been able to take the worst of the winter.

I know what you guys are talking about. It is not all about giving alternative choices, pricing and supply issues. Tier 2 brands are obviously have better margins for the shop when they ordered in huge # of truck loads. Not disputing this fact.

I am just saying they talk down on the tier 1 brands ... as one year they will say they make absolutely highest quality tires in the marketplace and then the following year, they will make claim they are a piece of sh&t and expensive and they will never, ever put this craps onto their own vehicles. They simply have to sell them because customers ask for them. Not much choice for the shop.

So, what gives ??

btw, if I recall correctly, the guy I spoke to face to face was Dave. Anyway, I can see you guys are loyal customers of the shop and I was simply just getting quotes.

Lastly, sorry OP. Got off course from your original thread discussion. I apologize.

They will occasionally push brands other than what you suggest, but that is because they are often more focused on getting you a great deal in a reasonable timeframe.

Push them on it and what you'll normally find out is that the reason for their alternate suggestions is due to low availability, long wait times, or high prices, on the brands/models you have specifically requested.

Yes, they are a business and perhaps lean a little towards higher margin items too. But if you are set on what you want, they will get it for you.

LOL! I like your approach, but opted for something easier on the wallet. I got myself a used WRX. Still planning to take the car out on dry days with decent temps.

This cars have soft paint. If you don't believe me, check the bottom rear of your side rockers. I bet it's all dinged up but tough to see given the location. This has never happened with my previous Bimmers. I don't think this thing will survive a few winter that well.

SEE BELOW WHAT TIRERACK IS RECOMENDING:

As it stands right now, the best thing you can do is the Pirelli 240 Sotto Zero S2 run flat in 245/40R18 and 275/40-R18. The wheel would be the Rial P10 18x8 and 18x9. This is a very nice set up that will work quite well for you.

If you order online, please reference "Blake" on the order as a previous contact. Thank you.

Why does your website say "This wheel is not available for your 2015 BMW M4 Coupe."?
Don't see any way you could order online.

It was actually my boss's idea as this will be a vehicle for the winter only and then it will be leased out to a client in the spring. One of the advantages of being in the Vehicle Leasing Business My previous M's have never been used as a winter vehicle.

2015 M4 - Winter Wheels BMW Recommendation

Hey Everyone,

was at BMW Toronto this afternoon and their initial recommendation for Winter Tires and wheels are as follows

Continental Winter Contact TS380P 255/40 R18 99V on 640M rims.

this was for non Ceramic Brake config $3700

Not sure I like the Continentals as have been using Pirelli Winter SottoZeros series II for the last few years on my 2008 and 2011 335xi

just my thoughts

I would avoid the Conti winters if those are in the "package"... had a set and they weren't very good if you care about snow traction. I'd go LM-60, Nokian or something like that first. If you want cold, dry winter traction, then I'd go Sottozero or Mich PA4. The Conti's, based on my experience, were not great at anything.

Winters I have owned and my personal and subjective ranking based on type of winter use...

For snow/slush/ice traction:

1. Nokian Hakapellita R2 (this is my guess based on all reports but I won't know for sure for a couple of months)
2. Blizzak LM-60
3. Blizzak LM-25 (discontinued) ... below #3 and they suck in deeper snow/slush/ice.
4. Dunlop 3D
5. Michelin PA3 (PA4 should be a bit better and might move this rating to #3 but I haven't owned a set yet)
6. Conti

For dry, cold pavement and VERY light snow:

1. Michelin PA3
2. Dunlop 3D
3. Conti
4. Blizzak LM-25
5. Blizzak LM-60

I guess the order is almost reversed

I personally weight bad weather performance over dry weather because I hate worrying about getting stuck in a storm. I'm going with the Nokian and my second choice would have been the LM-60. However, if I cared only about cold, dry performance it would likely have been the PA4. The Conti wouldn't even be on the list.

I had experienced:

Dunlop M3 / 3D - overall good performance in snow/ice and dry
Conti 830P - okay all around and they are quiet, esp. for highway.
Michelin PA4 - Excellent in dry but just okay/average in deep snow & icy condition. Due to very soft rubber compound, they wore out after 2 seasons or may be due to too much tq laid down on the M car.
Blizzak LM25 - pretty good on snow/ice. They wore pretty fast.

I'm looking at another alternative - 19" rim (don't know the manufacturer off hand) with a square setup using Bridgestone Blizzak LM32s (255/35) for $2466 plus tax. Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with the LM32s so I don't know who well they'll do in deep snow and ice. What few reviews that I have seen (not many are useful) indicate that they're marginally better than the Continentals for snow. Anyone care to offer any insights?

Nokian Hakkapeliitta

I called Kal Tire about getting Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 tires for our cars. They said that the Nokia tires are not speed-rated for our cars. They only go to Speed Rating R (170km/h) and suggested they wouldn't be appropriate for our cars.
I countered that I never go anywhere near that speed--especially in winter--to which they said I need to go in to the store and speak to a specialist.
Any of this make sense?

M
That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. The tires are not speed rated high enough to match the top end of the car but that doesn't mean they can't be used. The Blizzak LM-60, which is commonly used on performance cars, also has a lower speed rating than OEM. All that means is they aren't rated for sustained high speed driving and they will have lower performance characteristics.

I had mine installed on my wheels at a very reputable shop and they knew it was for the M4 and it was a non-event. The tire on the car doesn't have to match the speed capability of the car, it just means you can't exceed the tire's limit and need to understand and respect the differences in handling performance. Load rating and that sort of stuff is a different issue but speed rating is silly for him to even raise the issue other than to caution you that they aren't the same as PSS and you shouldn't be racing on them .

P.S. If you go to Tire Rack and build an 18" winter package for the M3 (E92) it gives you Blizzak WS80 and X-Ice as options... both only are H speed rated which is less than OEM. Does a lower speed rating tire mean degraded handling (softer compound and construction) and a lower safe upper speed limit? Yes. Does it mean not being able to safely use the tires within the tires operating range? No. If their assertion were true, this would apply to almost ALL winter tires (their speed rating being lower) than the summer or AS tires on the car as OEM.
