Currently own a 2017 M4 as my daily and a 2012 R8 V10 as my weekend car.
It's not that I would hate to drive the R8 as a daily car, but it feels very nice to come back to the M4 as a "comfortable & practical" everyday car after ripping the R8 on the weekends. There is no such thing as "the one car" so the M4 (or M3) will never satisfy me personally as a fun car AND a daily car, and driving the R8 everyday will always make me want a more comfortable car to drive everyday. So if I were in your shoes I would try to keep the M3 as a daily and add another car as a fun car. I think a Viper (gen 3 or gen 4) would be a killer weekend car as well. |

I've driven the AMG GT S, and it is amazing. Probably the best front-engined car I've ever driven. The steering and handling are incredible. And it's super approachable.

Really different price levels here, even a used GT is like 20 grand more than a new M.
I don't know about having it as an only car. Keep the M as your daily beater. That said, the Benz does look like the Ambiguously Gay Duo car. |

You are talking about going from a 4-door, 4-seat sedan to a dedicated two seater sports car. Question is why did you buy the M3 in the first place if you did not need the space? Having owned a R8 now for four plus years, it is an entirely different (and better) driving experience than the M3. But IMHO the R8 and AMG GT are not nearly practical enough as an only car.

The Cayman would be great for spirited drives only, but it wasn't perfect as a DD - since I have space and budget constraints, one car is it for now. Hoping to have a 3rd garage bay someday. That's where an R8 would need to sit as well, at least in my opinion - very different "experience" with that car too - it isn't going to blend into traffic or parking lots at all, which can be good or bad depending on your point of view. It is just something to think about. Hard to beat the M3 on the "range" of uses though - one of its strongest attributes IMO.

Just ask yourself, can I afford to maintain them? If the answer is yes, go for the gt or r8.

First off thanks for all the imput..
I also have a 2016 528(wifes car). At the time when i ordered the M3 there were not any 2 door cars i wanted in that price point. Now if i choose to spend more there really are no 4 door cars in that price point. I would not be against the R8 as much but it really has no trunk space..and on the very few times i would have to drive it to the airport..well..i also could take uber..but i hate uber.. |

From my experience R8 v10 in a 6-speed gear box > AMG GT
Never been a fan of AMG cars and just another Mercedes to me....

Have you considered a 911? I went through a similar decision making process for the best all around DD.
R8 Maserati GTS Drove both, really wanted the R8 but its my DD (wife has an SUV). Decided it was just too impractical as my only car. Was about to pull the trigger on the GTS then drove by the Porsche dealer. Drove a 991.1 4S and never looked back. Checks every box for a DD plus semi-exotic sports car... looks incredible. pedigree. strong resale value. rare where I live. good for track days / driving events. rear seats plus frunk for day to day errands. doesnt blend in w the sea of german m's, amg's. people taking pics, always asking questions. the list goes on.... If you are into performance driving you will get bored of the Merc. That's why I didnt get the GTS. Its too one dimensional - great power and sounds great but not visceral. But if you are looking for a comfy fast fun car the Merc will be great but blend in with all other German sedans around town. 911 will stand out M4 CS or 911 will give a very visceral driving experience that will not get old. That's why every time I buy a new car, I drive the latest Audi version Merc version then always ended up with the M car - more track focused ability than the Merc / Audis
