BMW Software Update

Is there a methodology behind the sequencing? Is 003.003.001 newer than 001.00x.xxx? I tried to update my MY 2015 F82 (US) with UPD05074 and received the incompatible error message. I have updated successfully in the past with the same jump drive. I was hoping this would fix my issue with the BMW Online widgets suddenly not working. My current versions are:

MN-003.003.001
TN-003.003.001

Just tried updating my 2018 F80 ZCP and same as everyone else - file not compatible. Been having huge issues with CarPlay since the last iOS update (now crashes all the time when trying to play music - quits every 2-5 minutes) and was hoping there was an update to address it. Time to turn CarPlay off for good which I have only found useful to navigate my playlists...would have been more fun to light 3 cigars with $100 bills y'all...

I am downloading the same file today for my 2015 F83 - and it says incompatible vehicle- Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong? It is the only file on the thumb drive. It is supposed to be UPD05074.bin file, correct?

2016 M4 - version:


www.bmw.com/update shows upd09031 as the current file for my car also and errors with incompatible software. I tried a newer and older USB; FAT32, EXFAT and the results are the same.

Tried renaming the file to upd05074 and get the same message.

I also tried the "Restore" option and evidently you have to have a previous software file to load, so I was unable to go past the initial selection.

I did find a thread somewhere else from about April 2017 that posted a reply from BMW Connected Drive:
"Achmis says that he checked the German and the U.K. website for Software Updates and it seems that there is a known issue and the bugfix was not deployed in the U.K.

Currently there is no new software available for your car/headunit.

There was an error in some country markets where the website frontend was using a wrong interface and thus you get the wrong information for available updates.

The offered updates are not for your car/head unit. So the information you get during the update process is correct.

This information has been passes onto the responsible department to put more pressure on the bugfix deployment. Which will allow you to download Software Updates yourself when available."

I'll be reaching out to BMW Connected Drive tomorrow.

It amazes me that my phone works flawlessly in every car I rent, but not in either of my BMWs.

So poking around some and I tried https:// with the following legacy.bmw.com/_common/shared/owners/bluetooth/bin/upd05074.bin and was able to download the UPD05074.bin version and tried that. I did get a different message that stated "Unable to install software in this vehicle"



I suspect that BMW has a glitch on their site with the VIN entry as described in the response from Connected Drive that I posted from another site.

BTW, the link provided will work for any valid software .bin version.

So I think I am starting to figure this out.

The release notes for 5074 are here:

The 5074 software updates MN & TN versions of the software. If the next grouping is not -001 or -002, the software does not apply, like in the case of -003. I suspect the .003.001 is the actual version number of your MN-003 and TN-003 software.

Just my educated guesses....YMMV.

Are you sure of your new version...can you post a picture?

The release note for 5074 does not list that version; I'm thinking it may be:
MN-002.055.071 & TN-002.055.070 - see EDIT below

It appears BMW has a typo in their "update to" version list. The section where it describes what adjustments are made lists .255. and not .055. as original version - it appears the upgrade to version should list .255. as it does at the end of this section.


Still be great if you can post a picture of your version to clear up what is the typo.

I'm going to escalate to the local BMW dealership today when I pick up my wife's X3.

Has anyone been able to figure out a software/hardware correlation? Or what about the software numbering convention? For example is the software update that BMW is pushing out only applicable to NBT hardware (in MY15 and MY16 cars) vs NBT Evo hardware in MY17+ cars. I have not updated my software since I purchased my car (a MY17 car) in Dec 16. Yet my car appears to have more current software than MY18 cars posted above. I have:

My phone appears to be working fine, BTW. I am running an iPhone 6s with iOS 11.3.1 and before that iOS 11.2.6. The only small "glitch" I have noticed with my phone is that sometimes when my phone connects to the car, the radio will switch from the last source I was listening to (usually sat radio) and go to the Apple Music app - but not play any tracks I have on my phone (I am currently running with CarPlay active for the past few weeks). It is very sporadic and I can't pinpoint how to even duplicate it. But it doesn't happen enough to be a big annoyance since I just hit one of my memory buttons to go back to the sat radio station I was previously listening to.

I have been monitoring this thread for some time now, but up until now I did not try to update based on the "hit or miss" success people were having, regardless of model year. I decided to give it a shot today and it worked...

I started with:

TB: 006.006.006
MB: 006.006.006

After I updated today, I now have:

TB: 006.007.032
MB: 006.006.006
HB: 006.007.032

The file I downloaded from BMW was UDP09032.BIN and the PDF file about the update seems to have been updated as well (at least since the last time I saw it, which did not have my software version). As far as what this update will do for me, probably not much since it seems to be for iPhone 8, 8+ & X and I am still rocking a 6s...

Did the update today on my 2018. The latest download updated the HMI and I noticed the contact names in the HUD with CarPlay is the complete name where as before it would cut out characters from both the left and right side.

I think car offered OTA update few days ago, but I said "Later" and it never came back.
