Is anyone having issues with front tires at the track?

Hi,

I am going through a set of front tires in two sessions at MSR IN Cresson, Texas. It's not the tire pressure, not lack of camber as I have -2.5 in the front (ground control camber plates) with zero toe.

Has anyone seen excessive tire wear like I have?

I am thinking to go with 19's all the way around square.

What do you mean by "excessive front tire wear" ?

Uneven wear across the tread? Front tires wearing faster than rears? Chunking/melting of the tread?

Are you getting scalloping of the tread blocks or wearing/blistering on outside shoulder?

Not sure what I would call it. Look at the middle tread. It's wearing at an angle.

Tire was at 35psi hot. Tried another set at 32 hot and same thing happened.

Someone should give the RE71R a try. They have them in 265/35/19 and 295/30/20

Not a bad idea. I wonder if 285/35/19 would fit up front. With stock size in the rear. Would make the set up close to square...

That kind of wear is actually pretty typical of the PSC2 on the track. GT3 and GT4 guys were having the same wear. The tread blocks squirm under the weight of the car and wear in a triangular pattern.

The real solution is Hoosiers. Would need more camber to run them but because there are no tread blocks, if aligned properly should wear evenly across the tread.

Interesting. I have a 991 Gt3 and I have never experienced that with the car and the PSC2.

I think I will check the toe settings and might go with a different tire.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Is anyone having a similar issue?

I believe this is an inherent weak point of the PSC2. Due to the rather wide and deep longitudinal grooves (to make the tire acceptable in the wet), the tread blocks are not wide and stiff enough and thus deform significantly under load. The one time I tried PSC2, I had the same experience (I also disliked them because I found they heat cycled out rather fast).

As for front tires wearing faster than rears, I think this is something that cannot be avoided when running a staggered setup. The F8X remains a nose heavy chassis meaning that the front tires need to work harder than the rears. Going with a square setup to be able to rotate the tires means giving up the ability to put down the power coming out of corners. After having tried both, I decided to live with the compromise of a staggered setup.

The challenge with the GTS is finding suitable track tires in the 19"-20" stock sizes, options are rather limited. The RE71R is not a bad tire, but it remains a street tire and will not be able to exploit the full potential of the GTS IMO. The Pirelli Trofeo-R in 265/35R19-295/30R20 could be an interesting option for keeping the stock wheels IMO since it is a true R-compound.

Another option is going with 19" wheels all around, which opens more options from other tire manufacturers.

Correct. That is why I said it is not a bad thing necessarily. The fronts are doing a huge amount of work with the stock setup of the car. That said I would rather spend on tyres and have the huge mechanical grip it does over dealing with understeer.

In my opinion you are running too much camber for these tires. If you look at the pictures, the outside is not even close to the same wear as the central blocks. So too much pressure is on the inner side.

Another option might be to soften up your dampers a little in the front. So you work your rear tires a little harder.

I'm far from an expert but does this make sense to any of you track rats?
