@ciaranob , as I mentioned somewhere else, if you are concerned get ISTA/D and run the various procedures I documented above. Since then my battery has been running normal.

I sometimes wonder if things like an iPod plugged into the USB, or a cigarette-lighter USB charging plug, act as constant drains whenever the car is off. Maybe it's time to start putting those plastic cigarette plug covers back in...

no their powerless when ignition/accessories off. That's not it, it's the software allowing a certain port to continue, it sticks like a glitch.

edit: known of what I said is factual it just sounds good.

FYI, I had no blackvue or anything like that. But to answer your q, given you can open you door, unlock the hood, put a LiFePO4 trickle charger capable of detecting very low voltage on the proper posts in the engine bay, and the battery should wake up and start charging.

Or you get those booster packs, just like the tech from BMW road side assistance keep with them and used on my car to wake the battery.

Aside from that, have no clue how you can get in the trunk, maybe you have to take apart the interior. GL.

thanks.. i have the bmw charger (12v) but guess i need a high voltage charger to bring it out of the "under voltage protection" hibernation the car and battery puts itself into.. hopefully i can get a hv lit-ion charger to wake it up and charge the thing. i cant believe there isnt a hidden keyhole for the trunk. seats are closed, no ski access and no trunk key.

All you need is a LifePO4 trickle charge that detects very low voltage on a dead or very empty battery. You dont need a HV charger ... There are three models now on the market, one from BMW, one from CTEK, and Optimate.

But I think ordinary booster pack can wake up the battery too, but probably a bit rough.

As to your ordeal, imagine if you couldnt open you door because you removed the keyhole I think there was a thread somewhere here with a situation like that!

I jus came back from 3 days away to find my car in a heavy discharged state. It's a week old!!! Well, after wondering what the hell was going on, it started fine, but it seems I had left the OBD2 wireless sensor plugged in. I guess these things use power even if the car is off and in sleep mode. Good lesson.

Now I want to charge my battery but I guess my Deltran Battery Tender won't work??

I'm looking at the Optimate as suggested by aboulfad . Can I leave that charger plugged on the car all winter? I used to do that with my Battery Tender on my E90, as I store the car a little ways from my house in the winter. I'm looking for a charger/monitor that will be able to remain plugged in for long periods and not harm the battery.

Is the Optimate capable of doing that?

JFB , yep the optimate is capable of doing that and more, however you linked a model that isnt even 5A, this is the correct one: https://www.amazon.ca/OptiMATE-Lithi...keywords=tm291

Do I need 5A?

My primary use for it will be to keep the charge during the winter storage months....

Not only that you do, that other model is for batteries 2-30Ah, while ours is rated 69Ah, so why would you want that ?

Sorry dont know all models, check for LifePO4, battery rating > 80Ah, and charge current 3-5A. Read the manual of the known widely used lifepo4 chargers and compare. That is a CT model, and no harm in spending $150-$200 on a charger like CTEK or Optimate for a $100K CDN car...

Post edited. Manual says it's good for lithium iron phosphate which is LifePO4 if I read the internet correctly.

It should work then I'm guessing.

I would spend double and buy a specialized model for LiFePO4, that one says "including", so right there i loose trust. Also check if it has a mode for detecting 0V or very low voltage which may happen if your battery ever dies, it has an internal switch that disconnects it, and then most chargers will not charge as they see no load.

Yes, but only to re-activate the battery disconnect switch and to allow to start the engine, once that is done it should not be used. Its a nice little unit, I was going to buy one similar when I had my battery trouble but since we have BMW roadside assistance I opted to spend the money for a trickle charger. Heres what BMW says:
Quote:
A power pack, charger or second battery (e.g. jump-start) can be used if it is necessary to apply
voltage at the battery terminals to reactivate the disconnect switch according to the table above.
When a charger is used, it must have a mode for completely discharged batteries or manual start
of the charging procedure because the battery will otherwise not be detected and the charging
procedure will not start.

2018 M3 and noticed that with engine off and auxiliary on the voltage cycles up to 13.1Volts and then about 12 seconds later it goes down to 12.1Volts, then up again, then down again. I have never seen this before and I do constantly monitor my voltage (radar detector has voltage display). Never seen it do this before... Car is a 2018 and Battery is less than one year old. No DTC codes.... What can I do to troubleshoot this as I’m pretty sure it’s not normal ....

First, you need to measure the Ubatt with a trusty multimeter and toss aside your radar reading. If indeed your Ubatt is fluctuating, the car would most likely store a fault. To read proper faults, you need ISTA+.
