Help! AY vs SS!!?!!??
I just placed an order for an SS/SS interior M4 ... I loved how that combo looked at the dealership but now I am in doubt over AY. And because AY is like the poster child color, there are a lot of great shots available online, which don't help me at all! I feel like SS/SS is a great color, unique yet, under the radar kind of thing... while AY is awesome, it's at everyone's face all the time, and I am not 100% sure if I can look at it for many years
In essence, SS feels too mellow, AY seems too hyper -- but I love both. Sakhir Orange would have been the perfect middle ground, but unfortunately that's not an option :'( I am looking for advice from SS and AY owners -- what do you think about the colors? How much attention does AY attract vs. does SS always go under the radar? Do people stop to take pictures and compliment and such (like other people say) for the SS as well, or are those reserved exclusively for the AY and SO royalty??? I don't have much time until it goes into production -- help me decide!!!

I ordered up SS/SS last week but on an M3 with the carbon roof and black 19's
I think it will look exceptional! I like Austin yellow, I just couldn't live with it every day. |

I have MG (which may even be more 'understated' than SS...) and I still get A LOT of attention. I'm sure I would get that much more with AY.
I almost went AY, but as Colinv6 mentioned, I'm not sure if I would be able to live with it every day after the fist few months or so of ownership.

I don't think you would ever regret AY, but it sounds like you want to stay under the radar, so you should probably avoid it. I personally wanted something more lively after driving a boring silver car.

PS whatever you decide it's always a relief when it gets locked down, as all the worry over spec and colour disappears, there's nothing you can do but wait and the point of no return has passed

Stick with SS/SS. Its a gorgeous color! AY is awful in real life! And it attracts bird poop like no tomorrow! It's like even pigeons hate this color and take a dump on it, it's that bad!
I love SS by the way. It's elegant. |

I'm in the same boat, OP! My order is for SS/SO but I can't get Yas out of my mind! I 100% agree with your sentiments above. However I'm going to hold strong and keep my SS order lol I think.. we'll see. Regardless, I'm sure we'll be happy with whatever color we choose. I just don't want to look back and think, "What if..." lol

I like SS better than AY. I prefer more subtle and mellow. I'll try to find a picture to show you how nice SS is modded.

I've had my AY F80 for almost a year now - I still absolutely love it and I've received at least weekly people waving, giving thumbs up, etc - so all positive feedback.
The key is - if you really like a certain color - you have to go with it regardless of what others think. So - to answer your questions: 1) no - have not gotten tired of AY - not even slightly - I still find myself staring at it in my garage, after I park, etc; 2) if I would have gotten a more mellow color - I definitely would Have regretted NOT getting AY; 3) if you were on an island by yourself - which color would you get? (regardless of whether that is AY, SS or something else) - that is the color you should get. |

I have a SS/SS M4 and love it .
It is nice and classy and shows the lines of the car beautifully. SS is a very dynamic colour that changes with lighting. The SS interior is also beautiful and make the interior light and airy without being too bright. See here for some pics http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1045825 http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1027960 That being said, AY is also a great colour. It is much more "in-your-face" though, it is for those who enjoy flashy colours. I like it a lot, but just not for my own car .

Both colors have their pros/cons.
AY is beautiful and I love mine. It is very in your face. Young people love it, women and older people don't Easy to live with and maintain. I like mine but find myself wishing I had something a little more understated so people don't notice me zooming around as much SS is also nice. I sometimes find it has a baby blue hue to it that I'm unsure of. In CanAutM3's signature, his car is beautiful!! I wonder whether it is always that pure of a silver or if it is more blue, more of the time. IMO, a SS/SO combo with black wheels and black accents is killer. My favourite color today is SO... I've really grown to like it. My son wants me to get my next car in "red" so it might be either a SO or an individual color (except I can't stomach the premium for paint ).

What others think is irrelevant, as you will have to live with that under-stated or screaming color every day. Since we don't know you, or your plans for the car (personal vs. business use), we can only add to confusion with our subjective feedback. The only thing I will say with certainty is that internet pics only give you a misleading idea of what the color will look like in real life. Do make an effort to go see the color in sheet metal under varying lighting conditions (sunny, cloudy, dusk, etc). That's the only way to really see what it will look like once you buy it. I drove 75 miles to see SO M3 at another dealership before I confirmed that I will (and do) love SO. Until then, I glanced at a SO M6 at NYAS under incandescent lights, and was underwhelmed by it. By the way, SO is still available, but only as an individual color. If you really want it, talk to your SA about pricing it out. a

Here is a pic of a very nice SS M4. I believe it is user Bokke's car.

Funny how I posted this exact picture on a different thread to convince someone else that SS is a great color. Now you are doing that to me.

I went AY and was worried it would be too loud. It isn't. It is a stunning color (pics DO NOT do it justice). I do not regret the choice, and in fact shocked by its beauty every time I open the garage. It will get attention, but in a very positive way.

I think I have made my decision.
The first M4 I ever saw (in pictures/videos) was an Austin Yellow. I think that was the color they launched with in Pebble Beach. Gorgeous, no doubt about it. It has been the model's main color in my opinion, that is used most for marketing, and almost defines how playful, sporty and bold the new M4s are. After I made the decision to get an M4, I ran the configurator a hundred times. Ironically, not once did I pick Silverstone. It was always between AY, MW and Black. But since my E92 was Sapphire Black and my M235i was Mineral White, I heavily leaned towards the amazing Austin. I went to the dealership having my mind set on AY. There were 3 AYs and 2 SBs, all lined up together. But then off to the side, on it's own little section, there was the SS/SS. I kept looking at AY from all sorts of angles snapping an array of pictures, but out at the periphery of my eye, I just kept glancing at the SS. It was't screaming for attention, it wasn't asking me to take it for a spin, it wasn't telling me that it is the poster child of the M4 colors. It was sort of, just there, almost smirking at me, knowing that it was a cool color, but without having to scream it loud at all. For me, that feeling was weird, and I did not know what to make of it. It challenged what I had thought about AY or SO, and the M4 over the past few months, without even trying. However, I shrugged that weirdness off and went home still hell bent on the AY. To confirm, I went to the dealership again to look at the Austin. This time however, I entered through a different door. And there it was, the first car I saw was the SS, all by itself. I shook my head, and said -- wow. I did not go past that car to look at the AY at all. Colors like AY keep coming into mind because they are so loud and amazing in their own sense, and are great on the M4. But I think I have finally understood why I loved SS in the first place: that sudden "wow", that "pictures don't do it justice", that "you have to see it to believe it" factor. It is cool, ostentatious, unique and classy, all without having to try hard at all. Thanks everyone for your input and helping me make my decision: Silverstone on Silverstone it is! Can't wait

Wanna stay classy for long time to come? Go with SS. Even more so for me if you stick with silver 19" rims too. Its just so T-1000-ish. Its not just a plain "silver" so I don't expect it to be dull in the long run.
I do think AY is a great color for the F80 but I question the look in long term. Honestly I'm torn with SO in same manner but would probably lean SS.
