BMW USA has confirmed USA M3 and M4 will have the new Lithium starter batteries.

Dealers have been told to manually set chargers down to 14V untill a software update of their chargers allows the system to automatically lower the voltage when connected to a M3/M4

Li-ion 30 Battery

I just came back from test driving an M4. What a BEAST of a car!! Finally got to see and confirm that the car will have a Li-ion battery.

Anyone have any idea of what will be required to store the car during winter with that battery? I don't think that regular trickle chargers will work...

NEW INFORMATION:
Just received the CTEK Battery Charger Lithium US. The charge cycle is at 13.8V. I wonder if that will be OK. I saw somewhere else that max charging voltage was 13.6V... I will make sure that I ask at the dealer, but not holding my breath on them knowing the right answer...

Yes you are correct regular chargers will not work.

Ctek has a LITHIUM XS charger so i e-mailed them and asked if it would work on F8X Li-ion batterys but thier answer was no.
Ctek is OEM suppliers to BMW so we'll see if they or another company comes up with a working charger.

Regular chargers will kill the battery as they charge at too high a voltage.

Unfortunately as with many new technologies it will take some time for places to release new chargers since teh market is very limited at the moment.

Dealers had to have their workshop chargers reprogrammed to recognize the Lithium batteries and charge at a lower voltage.

Deltran made the BMW-branded standard charger, and I see they now offer a lithium version on their website:

http://batterytender.com/products/au...s-lithium.html

Perhaps BMW will use them for their own lithium version too?

Deltran only made the one for BMW USA.
Ctek make them for the rest of the world.

The current Ctek one and the Deltran one you showed are for small Lithium Ion batteries up to 12AH. This is too small for the new F80/F82 battery that is 69AH.

Hopefully Ctek will make one of their wonderful chargers for the new batteries soon.

P.S These are not the chargers BMW dealerships use in their service departments.
Those are usually very expensive 105A Deutronic programmable units.

Will the car accept a standard lead acid battery if I need an emergency replacement?

Sent a message to Deltran this morning asking them if they are planning on releasing a product that works with this new battery technology.

This will definitely will be an issue for me since I will not be driving the M4 during the winter months here in OH.

Jump Starting

Another question that begs to be asked is, can you jump start this car with cables connected to a car with a lead acid battery?

Should be fine along as you follow the procedure in the owners manual.
Its the peak voltage from external chargers that are the problem.

Cant see why it wont work for a emergency short term replacement.

Dont know if the system can be set for a "regular" battery though, so you may find some errors cropping up like when you dont register a new battery fitment via the diagnosis software.

One cool fact is a normal agm battery has around 300 cycles...that's discharge and recharges. The lithium has over 3000...so that's pretty awesome!

You can not over charge this battery it has battery isolating switch(relays) built in to it. It has 2 of then one as a redundant back up protects the li-ion cells from voltage, current and temperature issue. Jump starting the car with another car will work and using a booster pack will work as well.

Some battery specs:

-Normal volts 13.2
-Max temp 176F over this isolating switch opens
-Weight 14kg (old 26.5kg)
-Max charging volts 14.4 over this and the isolating switch opens
-If charge current is to high or short circuit isolating switch opens
-Total discharge protection below 8 volts for 60sec
-Life cycles 5000(old 350)
