Definitely rocks stuck in the rotor. Just touch the dust shield and you can see how loud it is. I wish they made it out of a different material or something... its ridiculous. It makes the car sound like something is broken. Last time I had to jack the car up and take the wheel off to find it. Try backing up or using the e-brake while moving slowly.

I hope it's just a rock. I've gotten the sound a couple times in my 550 miles of ownership. One time it sounded like a dog barking.

From what I understand the plastic bottle crunching noise comes from rust that builds on parking brake while parked, and it says something in owners manual about applying the hand brake lightly while driving slowly to clean it off after rain or car wash to eliminate the noise...I only heard it a few times on my f80 in 3k miles but keep it garaged, haven't washed it much lol and it hasn't rained much lately in our area plus it's flat here so don't always pull hand brake when parked good luck that's my take, haven't heard noise since I've been cleaning off the e-brake per the manual when needed

The sound I heard sounded like my exhaust had fallen off and was being dragged under the car..........believe it or not it was small stones stuck in the heat shield.

I've been getting it since last night (400 miles, non-CCB, no wash yet, rained a couple of days on the weekend). Its probably one of the most awful sounds I've heard coming out of any car... This is ridiculous. Tried pulling the ebrake slightly and the noise definitely got worse.
Will try to move it back and forward a few times, pulling the ebrake slightly to see if I can dislodge the mysterious pebble...or maybe my car will just explode. |

Mine has done this now at least a half dozen times. My wife and I are calling it the 'M Cough'.

So I remembered that I had a variation of this sound on one other car and wanted to share that: I had a car that everytime it hit 9 or 15mph (something like that) for the first time after a re-start did an ABS self-check.
And it made a .5 second grinding sound before going away. Now I believe this is a diff noise, don't get me wrong, but I also wonder if BMW's "brake rotor wipe" tech that applies the pad to the rotor very lightly to wipe the rotor clean is also a factor in some of these noises....

I just started to fiddle with the flimsy aluminum shield on my drivers side rear rotor, and it sounds just like it's where the sound would be coming from. Also heard some debris loosen up as I pulled and pushed gently. Hopefully that clears it up. This looks like a design flaw; that shield is garbage.

I am not buying the stone in the heat shield theory. I am hearing it at least 2/3 times a week at very low speeds in my work parking garage. It's very annoying.

I'm also not sure about a stone. But I do think it is related to the aluminum brake shield/plate.
Could it be catching on the spinning wheel/tire or something at lower wheel spin? |

Drive on the shoulder where all the little rocks are, and you will get one stuck in there eventually. Then you will know it is a rock.

I tried moving it a bit, there doesn't seem to be anything lodged inbetween it and the rotor as far as I can tell. It really just feels like this thing is flimsy and has gotten slightly out of perfect alignment and now sometimes doesn't fully clear the rotor. I'm sure debris would make it even worse.
Anyone have any luck with BMW, yet? Can we just ask them to remove it altogether? |
