Not sure, never happened to me, but did look at a car with a missing oil cap while searching for my current S2K. Just knowing it was there would drive me crazy enough to try to retrieve it.

I may have once (definitely did) dropped a 3/8 socket attachment into the enginebay of my 2011 335ix. Its probably still in there, but I haven't owned the car for 3 years.

LOL, you be surprised what you will find from all the work you do under the hood. I found a pulley wheel one time that had broken off from the belt and was the cause of my squeaking.

They aren't as helpful when you have no friggin clue where the thing you dropped is hiding underneath the motor!

At least you didn't drop a bolt inside the frame rail of a jeep wrangler - which has no access point by which to remove said bolt - and then leave your brother driving the now very rattly jeep wrangler....

That's similar to the tool I used to retrieve my brake fluid reservoir cap, but that one looks pretty cheap.
