Question Why are used M5s/M6s so cheap?

One would think, that a car that costs almost 40% more than an M3/M4, it would hold more value as the years go by......

I don't know how things go in the USA/Canada, but I am seeing M5s and M6s here in Dubai in the used car market place go as cheap as the same year model of M3s......

Say for example, you can get a 2008 M3 E93 for 25K USD and you can get the same M6 for the same price.....

What makes these bigger beats lose so much value overtime? is it the fact that they are expensive to maintain that they become harder to sell over the years or is it that they are less in demand than M3s/M4s?

Let's take 2008 for example. 2008 E60 M5 is two generations behind now. I know the new G30 M5 didn't come out yet but it will be released this year + F10 M5 isn't being produced anymore. 2008 E9x M3, on the other hand, is only one generation behind.

Just look at an M5 or M6. They don't age well.... they look hopelessly dated and like yesterdays news long before their time. M3's of past generations STILL look fresh and current.

The 5er is a nice luxury sedan. The 6 in any guise looks like an overweight bathtub. You couldn't GIVE me a 6. Lots of people feel that way.

Obviously these feelings are reflected in resale values.

totally agree. The old ones look like dinosaurs when I look at them......

Look at this or this for example....... Same year model M3s are going for the same price if not a fe thousand more

Garage List
At least here in Canada, they struggled to get the M5/6 off the lots when brand new. When I was shopping for my M4 in 2014, my dealer offered me a brand new F10 CP M5 from the showroom floor for practically the same money my M4 cost me. It had been sitting there for over 6 months while there was a waiting list for the M3/4.

I hate to be harsh but I've always felt BMW missed the mark with the 6. The 5 is a beautiful car but not as a race car.

Less demand IMO. Bigger luxury cars are bought more for prestige. There's not all that much prestige driving around in an outdated model.

For sportier cars, the market is younger people. Younger people are more willing to buy used cars, keeping the demand higher.

How about the difference in the current values of a 1988 7 Series versus a 1988 M3?

Its a great thing for new buyers in the market that they get a car with such performance for so cheap but the simple economics lay down the law; supply and demand. There just isnt enough "want" out there for a 120k plus car as most of the laypersons out there are perfectly fine with a 535 or 528i. We are all unique here since this is an "M" board but the saturation of production has led to subvented programs (much lower money factors and low aprs) along with seasonal and regional trunk money (dealer can or doesnt have to share with the buyer as its not disclosed). Its sad when the average Joe can walk in and get 10% off an M5 on a lease but great for that exact buyer. But thats where the model is and the M6 suffers an even larger discounted fate because its a luxo gt coupe that is priced well into the low to mid 100k level. Expensive coupes are a niche sell at best in the commodity world of selling cars.

I don't know why, but for once I'm extremely happy about it. Only the 2nd used car I've purchased in my life, and couldn't be happier. Sucks when times comes to sell, but I'll de with that later.

It because they have poor traction, 600hp and rwd on street tires just dont work against competitors awd....

There are many reasons.
First of all these cars are expensive. Even in US a 100k+ car is so expensive and only a low percentage of people can afford them so basically even after 3 years a 50-60k car with 30k-40k miles on the clock is still expensive. Seller needs to reduce the price to get rid of it so you can see most of 2012 or 2013 models M5 and even M6 are being offered low 50k.

Second, and that's exactly the issue I had when I wanted to trade in my 4 months old 650i to get my M6 (back in 2013) is the depreciation coming from over pricing. Yes to me these cars are originally over priced. I traded a 4 months old 650i with 6k miles on it with 20k depreciation!

Furthermore the cost of maintenance after 3-4 years with no warranty is like a night mare for these cars and this is a main factor to reduce the price of a car. Even the gas cost can reduce the price further.

Finally M3/M4 are much more practical than M5/M6. These cars are so big and in many areas such as large cities are hard to be driven as DD car due to difficulty of finding parking spot and etc. On the other hand in many occasions M3/M4 are even more useful. Don't get me wrong there is no doubt M5/M6 are much better cars but we should admit they are not designed to be garaged. For many people these monsters are garage queen and that's why you can see lots of 2013 models and even 2014 models sitting on lease return lots with 20k on the clock...

Couldn't agree more. After almost 2 decades of buying/leasing every car I've ever owned new, I'll never do it again. You get raped. Never used to matter to me, but after starting over, being down on my luck, I've learned to appreciate money more than ever. Too hard to come buy to waste it.

I have definitely been enlightened, because I always wondered why M3's hardly ever depreciate, but 5's and 6's prices would be insanely low and they are the faster vehicle. I guess faster doesn't always equate to practical..

Well a 20k Toyota depreciates less than 10k in 5 years !!! How does your logic work here?

Oh they depreciate... the dollars in play are different but so is the starting point. Its about the percentages here. Take a peek at some 16's selling at the auction (M4's):
