Dialing In My Friend's Silverstone II F80 Competition Package
"I don't detail other people's cars. I want to enjoy it, not make it a job."
Well... That was until I had the chance to check out my buddy's '17 SSII Comp. Package. He was asking me all kinds of questions about what to do to get the paint dialed in and protected. I had a weak moment despite wanting to do maintenance corrections to all three of my vehicles, and told him to just bring the car by on a Sunday morning. (I forgot to tell my wife that meant I was skipping church...she didn't like that. But she really likes Tim, so I made it out alive.) As I've noticed with both of the BMWs that I've purchased, the paint was in great condition. Part of was Silverstone hides any imperfections much like my Mineral White, but I couldn't find any detectable swirls or scratches like most new cars tend to have. My GT3 had tons of sanding marks right from the factory that needed to be corrected. The good news for our time in the heat was that the car barely had any contaminants. We very well could have gone right from a wash to prep to last step protectant. But, Tim is a good friend of mine, so I decided to do what I would do if it was my car and jewel up the paint doing a one-step polish. There were most likely going to be some imperfections. We just couldn't see them because the car is silver. The project took 8 hours in total. Here is the "short" version of the process. If you want to see everything (I mean everything...), here is the extended cut. Last edited by Money2536; 09-23-2016 at 10:32 AM.. |

Silverstone II Correction 101
Looking forward to seeing the video this weekend and applying some of your techniques onto my own car. Thanks for making some of us small minded individuals a little smarter.

And somehow the Comp pkg wheels looks good here.
Silverstone is such a beautiful color, great job here. Question: i went to visit my friend in florida, and helped her do a quick wash on her X3 M Sport -- what do you do about love bugs? Those things are damn near impossible to get off

Otherwise, I just wash and get what I can off without too much pressure. Then get the rest when drying. |

Matt what is your comment about using a protective wrap such as XPEL Ultimate? Does it noticeably decrease any gloss or shine?
I'm getting my F80 M3 SSII arriving in NOV after my recent ED in Germany... thinking of XPEL on front full hood / chip-prone areas + CQuartz afterwards... live in TX if that matters. Since you are clearly a detail-oriented guy, wanted to get your opinion? This car will be my Daily Driver to / from work, etc... Thanks! |
