NYC may have that, but the state does not. I have only had a few fines go over 300. I have had point plea bargains and the fine is like 75 with a court charge of 85 or something.

This is the state fee I was talking about.

And this is point system. At 23 mph over the limit he has a 6 pt violation.
He would have to pay the fee I described.

For all of you California guys, the NYC police will show up for court date. That postponing scheduled date so he doesn't show up is history.

OP, good luck and try to take some of the advice offered above.

My two cents: Consider taking a defensive driving course, before your court date, it will make a good impression on the judge if you acknowledge you needed to brush up on your driving skills and knowledge of proper driving. You may also want to consider bringing an official copy of your driving history. I.E. when was the last time you received a ticket? If you were licensed in another state prior to the one you live in now, get a copy from them too. The Judge will appreciate your record, especially if it’s a good one. Last but not least, tell the truth and be objective about what happened. That means not blaming other less than stellar drivers for your actions. Also do not blame your powerful car, the judge knows you know what you bought into. Take responsibility for your actions, don’t postpone. I hope you were polite to the officer, which goes a long way, even if he/she did give you a ticket for reckless driving. Remember, they are doing a job.

Don’t hire a lawyer, you don’t need it, unless of course you have a real bad record. While they will send you letters offering their services, because your name is now a public record of the court system, you can help yourself out in this instance. I was in awe at the amount of letters I received. Save the letters, because if they have enclosed a self addressed label you should mail back a note saying your results without their help, if you did well. If you did badly, take them on their offer next time.

A did the aforementioned items and had my reckless case dismissed. I was being reckless on my motorcycle in regards to speed, not actions or inappropriate interactions with other drivers. The guy who went up before the judge right before my case was heard, had tried to blame the same officer who pulled me over as being reckless, since she had to chase him down. The Judge tried to warn him he was going down the wrong path of defense, even said he wouldn’t be going to jail today. The guy persisted with his case and the judge finally leaned back, heard what he had to say and fined the heck out of him. When I came up before the judge, the same officer indicated I was extremely polite.

It cost me $70 in court fees, $110 in driving course fees and a few hours from work. No record, no points, no premium increases. A price I had no issue paying especially with me pushing the envelope a bit on an early Sunday morning…..on my way to a certification class to teach people how to ride motorcycles. Oh, the irony.

So far in the last 2 years of owning my F80 I have had one incident where I could have gotten a ticket, but did not. I tore off from an intersection and had been doing 74 in a 35. Once the officer caught up to me I pulled over, rolled all windows down, turned the interior lighting on, put my hands on 10 and 2 and admitted I was being an idiot.

Good luck and let us know how you make out…

By the time you are alerted the cop already has a laser on you and has you if you are going at any significant speed over.

It's really nothing more than a false sense of security and they aren't going to save you from a cop who wants to give you a speeding ticket.

The best thing you can do is slow down and keep your eyes open. If you speed, just be prepared for the consequences. We all take the risk when we buy these cars.

Best of luck to the OP. I did online traffic school and it didn't cost much. Two weeks later I got pulled over and got a "warning" for 85mph in a 70. I have a lead foot and I really need to slow it down. I'm rolling the dice every time I speed which happens way too often in this car

I'm not a fan of radar detectors that make lots of noise due to false alarms so you never know when it's for real and might just ignore the annoying sound. Traffic school here costs $67 which isn't cheap IMO especially if all they do is have you look at some info on a website and fill out a questionnaire. Plus you have to pay the ticket, so then it's additional to that and is quite costly versus beating the ticket and paying nothing. You should fight the ticket as you have nothing to lose, then if all else fails do the traffic school.

I got a response back from a lawyer. I'm looking at:

396$ Fine (23 Over)
300$ to the DMV because it's a 6 point ticket

Lawyers offer: 300$. If he can't get the points reduced, he refunds his fee.

I'd do it and then let him handle it.

Agreed. Depends on the costs and your state. In my case, I'd rather just do a quick online traffic school and pay the ticket, rather than going to court and dealing with trying to fight something you will probably lose anyway while eating up most of your day at the courthouse doing it.

I suppose it doesn't hurt to try to fight it or at the very least get the ticket reduced. But time =money, and it's a hassle.

All I was getting at is detectors aren't really worth it IMHO. For one, they are pretty pricey for a good one ($400+) and they don't really protect you from getting speeding tickets. You just think they are because you're also driving slower from the constant false alarms

In my situation I actually get every other Monday off from work anyway so it isn't a big deal to sit in court for half a day to save potentially several thousand dollars in increased insurance premiums. I've been able to beat more than one ticket so it seems the odds are in my favor that's why I do it rather than eating the cost.

Oh I don't disagree. It's worth it if you can beat it. However, he's clocked at over 20mph over the posted limit (23 over to be exact). I don't really see them just throwing the ticket out or dismissing the case with an officer there and a verified speed.

Reduced fine maybe but still going to cost something and your insurance will go up anyway. Best shot in these cases is if the officer doesn't show up for court and that's just 50/50 or 100% depending on your state.

Traffic school may be a few bucks, but if it's an option it at least keeps the points off your record.

Still, it never hurts to try I guess.

I guess that would make sense I'm not aware of it as I haven't had more than 6 points on my license since like 2002, when I had 11 at one time. lol

I have an Escort 9500xi and it has saved me SOOOO many times in 5 years I can't even count.

Yeah I have V1 in my M5 and on both my Bikes (ZX14R, ZX14) Saved me Many times. I tend to save my "spirited" drives and rides for NJ, CT, and PA. Less damaging on my wallet if I get pinched there.

Waze + V1 have saved me so many times. It is not foolproof, so one has to pay attention as well. Just the other day, I was on a spirited drive with a Viper on my tail. Without any warning, I spotted a HWP about 300-yard ahead, so I pulled over to the slow lane and slowed down. The Viper got right up to the cruiser's ass, then pulled back. I guess the HWP was in a good mood, so did nothing. By the time I caught up with the Viper, he stuck his tongue out and gave me a grimace look.

Lol, this cruiser that got me was almost riding along my side, but on the middle lane while I was on the right. Thought I was gonna get away. As my exit approached my plan was to not signal and just make an exaggerated right turn, but he wasn't that dumb , once the exit was approaching he was riding my ass, then pulled me over on the exit ramp.
