My first car was a manual GTI MKII and I've had 4 cars total that were stick over 24 years. Finally went to DCT and not looking back. Although I enjoy driving my friend's manual once and awhile, the advantages of a DCT far outweigh my nostalgia. A good driver is a good driver, clutch or not.

I have f10 m5 with dct it's nice. Manual in m5 doesn't work because its daily driver for me. I chose manual in m3 because when i drive m5 i always end up in auto mode. Both are great transmissions no doubt. My m3 is weekend toy and when I drive want to have as much engagement as possible. Manual transmission no mistakes will be forgiven, can't drive car and drink coffee, can't rematch and the world knows you suck, fuck up the shift lose the race. For me manual I'm 100% engaged and DCT lacks that by a mile. Dct Faster, better Yes and also boring you can never say that about any manual car.

Oh, for sure, I can't disagree with the engagement level with the manual. It's very special and specific. But I wouldn't have been caught dead saying this 10 years ago but: the manual will be dead soon enough, both in motorsport and street driving, and there will be a time where we all have to let it go. Unless, of course, they make my dream transmission: A functioning clutch pedal with both a stick and column/wheel mounted paddle shifters. With the touch of a button, you can go full manual ie you need to work that clutch pedal and shift manually, or go into clutchless mode, where it functions like a DCT. Best of both worlds. Probably not economical nor will it ever happen.

It's hugely annoying but I haven't read anywhere that anyone's been able to code it off.

I saw it in the M2 forum that it's possible for them. It's under Settings/Instrument Cluster and there is a check box there to enable/disable the shift indicator. I followed the same steps in my M4 but we don't have such an option.

I learnt that many aftermarket parts are still not available for the F8x although it's more than 2 years on the market...

At least we still get to drive the car. In 20 years maybe we will be sitting in the car sipping coffee and chatting away on how we don't get even get to drive anymore.

I learned that you do not want to drop a nut near the intercooler -charge pipe inlet. Was installing my VRSF charge pipes when one slipped. Had to pull the intercooler and manifold off to get to that lil *%^#er.

Ok, I'm new to an F82, and I just experienced some fairly severe lurching while the (rpm?) button was in Sport Plus mode... Anyone know what I'm talking about and can you help me understand either what's happening or what I'm doing wrong?

Car was still "slightly" cold and I was pulling away from a stop sign... Seemed like it wanted me to break her loose, and the problem went away when I pressed the button back to Sport & Efficient modes...

The "rpm" button is the throttle sensitivity. In sport + it's the most sensitive to the input. If by lurch you mean kind of jerky then you probably just weren't applying throttle pressure smoothly. It's actually really easy to do, and made worse by the jerk it self (you apply throttle, car jerks you, you jerk your foot, throttle jerks, car jerks you,.... you get the idea).

Awesome. So, it's my throttle sensitivity button! Thank you! And yes, my guess is after driving it in efficient and sport, I hadn't felt sport+... Gonna be interesting getting used to that after years of full size trucks! Thanks!

And to answer the above question it is a DCT.

Earlier this year I dropped a nut in the dizzy hole of my big block Ford. Guess what? Pan and windage tray had to come off.

Yes, this happens to me sometimes too. It used to happen in my 6MT S4 as well, so it's not exclusive to the DCT. If you remember learning to drive stick, its an all too familiar occurrence.

This must be the definition of a circle jerk going on.

Exactly - this is why telling everyone a DCT is an "automatic" is a disservice; it's a manual with an automated clutch and the accelerator pedal is both clutch and throttle.

Anybody that's driven a stick recognizes exactly what's going on instinctively, but people thinking they're getting a torque converted planetary gear set with behavior to match are surprised.
