My Touareg's Navi shows me the speed limit and since it will be my road trip car for the next ten years or so because I have a family and the M4 would be too impractical for a road trip, I'm fine with not having it in the M4.

I still think it is stupid that they rely on a camera taking pictures of speed limit signs though...

In their defense, I would think that this will give more up-to-date information on speed limits. When limits change how long will it take to show up on GPS databases? Then again, how often do they change? Not too often, but still...

Cheers.

@ersin this is true, in fact my Touareg's speed limit info is sometimes wrong, but thankfully it is usually wrong by showing that the speed limit is actually lower than it really is so I can really never get a ticket. I still think it is a better approach because 1) it's update-able and 2) not all roads have speed limit signs, you may be driving for miles before you encounter one and what if it is obstructed from view by a big truck?

I have an A6 (with probably the same data since they're both VAG), and it has the speed limit info in the database as well. Mine is ALSO always wrong. 5 mph too low on the drive to my wife's grandparents. It adjusts correctly at every small town, etc... but is still too low.

I'm thinking the camera may be a better solution here. It should work for temporary speed limits like construction, etc...

Also, while we're talking about it...

I've brought this up a few times, and it should be an easy fix since it's just software... But if you have the speed limit info, AND you have that "speed buzzer" that no one uses (the one where you set it to a certain speed, like 60 mph and it buzzes or dings or whatever if you hit it)...

Why can't they combine those two? I'd love to set a buzzer or dinger indexed to the limit. Some sort of setting: Buzzer = either a fixed number OR 'speed limit +/- some number. I'd like to set it to buzz whenever I hit 8 or 9 mph above the limit.

That would still annoy the shit out of me. A couple years back I was on a business trip and my rental was a Ford Focus with a speed limiter set at 70MPH. Really?? REALLY ENTERPRISE???? WTF am I supposed to do at 70 if I want to pass?????????

I digress...

Database on car, even if update-able, requires someone actually collecting the new data, format it to something that the car's software can understand, and then somehow put it on your car, either via USB or 3G cellular data connectivity.

A camera gives you the actual speed limit where you are currently at. You can't get any more current and real time than this. While it can still misread signs, it is definitely more current and accurate than a stale database. We can argue weather it is cost effective or not, but the data is absolutely the freshest.

Garmin updates their maps a few times a year... I'm assuming the speed limit info is part of the map data, and I'm sure it doesn't change very often. Regardless, people need to use common sense when driving... I doubt the car will tell you to slow down if there is a temporary speed reduction or a school zone when children are present. Driving with your focus on the roads and the signs is the way to do it.

You actually got a Focus to hit 70? I'm impressed.

After driving an M4 with HUD I wish they had made the minor ticks on the visual "tach" brighter. Isn't obvious on quick glance where revs are.

You'll get them with the splash damage.

M View doesn't show Nav instructions; if anyone wants some more HUD photos, I'll do a few

Speed limit info uses both the camera and GPS info so its actually smarter than a regular GPS nav that you put in your window that only uses GPS.

I think you are correct... there MUST be a camera involved (maybe with GPS) as the car recognized temporary speed limit changed (construction) today... I was paying close attention

Speed Limit Info.

Safety first: Speed Limit Info including no-overtaking indicator shows the current speed limit in the instrument cluster, as well as information regarding no-overtaking zones.

This is shown on the Info Display in the instrument cluster or in the Head-Up Display. A special camera detects the relevant traffic signs. This information is processed by a control unit along with data from the navigation system. Features including the rain sensor are also incorporated, so variable speed limits in specific instances are also registered – under wet conditions or at certain times of day, for example. This means the driver will always be well informed about the road ahead. The Navigation System Business or Professional are required.

So what you're saying is that if you are in M-mode which for me is 100% of the time that I'm driving the car my HUD will not show me navigational info?

That is a huge bummer.

Well... It wouldn't be on by default. Or set it to speed limit +20. I'd find it handy for where sometimes the speed limit drops and I don't see the sign or something.

It's just M-Mode view for the HUD. You can keep the car in "M Mode" without having the HUD in "M-View".
