The subjective difference between the two viscosities was quite startling. It doesn't really matter because I learned a valuable lesson. For absolute best performance stick with the viscosity that BMW specs for the engine.

Can you give some feedback on your experience with Mobile 1 0w40? That's what I plan on running and am curious about your experience with it. Thanks.

I might try this oil ~ but bit pricy....
But the oil it self is good so I might give it a try or go back to REDLINE or MOTUL300V

Bmw / Shell / Pennzoil
Recommendation: FROM PENNZOIL OIL SELECTOR
Engine (G) (S55) Pennzoil Platinum Euro SAE 5W-40 Full Synthetic Motor Oil (a) . . Unless you see temps below 20F -- Why choose anything else? * Especially if you are changing oil between free service. . LL-01 NOACK 6.8% . . What other oil has a LL-01 Cert with a Lower NOACK? The 0W-40 oils are higher NOACK I am a fan of RL 0W-40 but short of 50K miles why void the warranty?? And it has a NOACK of 9% Last edited by 123Britt; 02-25-2017 at 07:35 AM.. |

than a recommended service interval? On this forum it seems like every one likes to change their engine oil early.

Got ya. Well either way I wouldnt bring my car to the dealership to have them put in an oil you purchased separately. Either do it yourself or take it to a local indy shop.
Why do you want to move away from the BMW/Shell oem oil? |

Keeping the car so I'm looking at using something more robust. Just concerned about keeping the warranty.

As for warranty, any LL-01 approved oil should be fine for that. If the Motul has the certification then you are good to go. |

I corresponded with Blackstone regarding their oil samples on the S55 engine. Here is what they said:
"Most of the samples we've seen from the S55 engine are using BMW's own oil, which makes sense, because probably the majority are getting their oil changes done at the dealership. We have seen some using Red Line 5W/30 and a few other oil types, but none that seem to be any better or worse in general than any of the others. In most cases, we find that the specific brand doesn't matter, as long as the oil is of the proper viscosity and meets all of the correct certifications for that type of engine, so as far as we're concerned, it's fine to use any oil that meets those criteria. We've not seen any one type of oil significantly outperform another, regardless of the specific engine or application, in terms of the results that we can measure from the used oil." Hope this helps!

WHAT?!??!?!??!111!!!!oneoneone!!!
You mean all the money I've been spending on crazy expensive oil has been for naught? NONONO!!!!!???!?!?!!!!!oneoneone111!!! PS: Yeah, many people have already realized this. Buying expensive oil is not quite as bad as wasting your money on some of the snake oil additives, but it's not much better.
