We're not really sure what to do as we've always just turned in the old car at the end of the lease and usually got a new one by ordering a few months ahead of time. I just checked and the residual payoff is $45,825 in December. I assume the car is worth more than that in this market. What do you suggest we do?

BTW, the car is garage kept and hardly driven. It has the competition package, white exterior, black interior plus we added a rear spoiler, carbon fiber rear diffuser, front lip spoiler, carbon fiber front splitter kit and performance steering wheel.

Thanks for your help.
Sell it outright or take it to carmax and cash out your equity

As of October of '21, third party dealerships cannot buyout a BMW lease from BMWFS. He would have to buy the car himself, pay taxes, and then sell it to CarMax.

Oh I had no idea. Just adds an extra step in the process I guess

Not just an extra set… extra cost as well.

Third party dealerships, like CarMax, used to be able to buy out your lease directly from BMWFS and they didn't have to pay taxes.

As it stands now, the individual would have to buy out the lease themself, pay all the applicable taxes and then sell to CarMax.

Most of the time the taxes eat up a good chunk of the equity.

Well that’s some bs now isn’t it. I flipped an x5 diesel for a $6k profit once. Guess I wasn’t the only one to do so ..

Have other manufacturers done the same ?

MSRP for an M4 build is actually really good in today's market!

If you like the car, I would advise extending out your current lease especially if the payment is low.

If you want to sell the car, there are ways to do with without having to buy it, pay tax, and then resell it. Typically, you can sell it to a dealer who has a bmw dealership within their group/network of dealerships. Wholesalers are also able to pay off BMWFS contracts if they have a good relationship with a BMW dealer.

I can't remember TX sales tax laws, but if you are able to get sales tax credit even on lease trade-ins, it may be best to try to get the equity out of the BMW dealer you are buying the new M4 from.

Hope that helps a little. Feel free to PM me if things come up in your process!

Other mfg’s have indeed done the same and actually BMW followed suit as they were late to that party. I also sold my X7 during its lease period and netted a nice upside right before they changed the rules.

My user ID for the business is new, but I'm a longtime lurker/member as well on here. Like most of you on the forums, I do a ton of research on every car I purchase and value real feedback from real owners.

In a very short time, I've built up a network of 15 BMW dealers, and I do the lion's share of all BMW deals on a popular leasing forum website. I myself sell 80+ BMWs per month, and I've learned a lot about what works and what doesn't work.

There is a lot of misinformation on this forum that is either anecdotal or a true unicorn deal when all the stars lined up on one particular car buying day.

I hope to clear the air and pull back the curtain on some of the shady ways car dealers try to make money off unsuspecting buyers.

To start:

——5-6% is invoice for BMWs depending on where you live. Dealers do not lose money if they sell you a car under invoice.

——12% is triple-net-zero for dealers just to move a unit. They are losing money on your deal with the hopes of hitting a BMW bonus tier. For some high volume dealers, they must sell over 200 cars that month to get a $500- $1000 bonus on every car sold that month.

——-Flagship money is a hidden incentive to move certain models. It's specific to the production date of the car sometimes. For example, an 2020 M8 built in 2019 has $10,000 flagship compared to a $2000 for a 2020 M8 built in 2020!
Be sure to ask the forum or dealer if there is any flagship money you should be aware of!

[B]For non-M cars, your goal should be 10-12% off before incentives/rebates AND a base [...]
