Clear Bra Couldn't Stop This!

I have my entire front end covered in paint protection film from Xpel (Ultimate).

But it appears that nothing could stop the rock that flew right at my hood and went straight through the clear bra and messed up my paint.

I went to the installer, but he wants 500 bucks to re-do the hood. I don't know if I want to spend that money right away, so I'm looking to you guys for some suggestions.

Should I cut out the ripped up flap of the clear bra and then fill up with touch up paint? Anything else I can do to make this less noticable? Thanks!

I know! I would hate if this happens again right after I spend 500 bucks.... so I'll probably replace it after a year or so.

In the meantime, any ideas to make this look less noticeable?

If the $500 includes professional touch up of the scratches as well as new PPF, I'd do that. Professional touch up is not cheap but invariably (if done by a skilled shop) better than most home jobs. It takes an amazing amount of time and patience to professionally touch up paint.

Barring that your best bet is to carefully trim away the loose Xpel and touch up the paint yourself.

Nope, $500 is only for removal and application of a new one. I need to get it touched up for additional $250. Its too much for this.

I'm planning to touch it up myself somehow- so looking for advice.

If without the clear bra, you probably need a new hood if it dent so bad. I will do it right away. Just 500 save you a new hood if you think that way. It's remove, clean, and install. 500 is ok price

Well, the only thing you can do is remove the loose Xpel as best you can (that might be difficult - perhaps use a scalpel and tweezers) and touch up the paint with OE paint. You can use the BMW's paint stick or try to order a paint pen, which is a bit easier to use. You might also check out Langka - it's pretty easy to use: http://www.langka.com

Sorry. If your base coat was scratched and your primer layer is showing, Clean it well and seal it w some clear coat/colour coat to prevent any contaminants from potentially causing more damage and forget about it... the first one hurts, then u re like it's a car, move on... touch up is very hard, requires lots of skill and patience.

Ouch that sucks, well at least the PPF prevented what may have been multiple scratches to the metal. I would touch it up and see how it looked, if bad, I would redo the hood.

Sorry, that terrible, but it does happen

$500 is about the norm. I would go ahead and get it taken care of. It can happen again. There is nothing that can stop a high speed impact from a larger piece or debris.

I would trim away the lifting area of film
apply touch up to the areas in a few tiny layers
then apply clear coat to fill the gap of the clear bra in two thin layers.

you are basically using color and clear to not make it an eyesore, and creating a "bandaid fix" if you will, to get you over until you are ready for a new hood.

We have done this quite a few times with great success.

Hoods are $500 to 650 for film alone.
There was a shop close to us who was doing them for $300...stretch marks all over the film, in the flats and in complicated areas. You don't want that.

Warranty doesn't cover accidental damage. Self repairing is only for light surface scratches

Since you will never get to a point where it "couldnt have the next day" I would just bite the bullet now to get it fully replaced and repaired including the paint.

AMMO NYC has a few videos on paint touch up. If you're going to do the touch up job yourself It'd be worth a look. Here's a link to his channel

Thanks for the replies, guys! I am not going to get the hood re-clear bra'ed. With my luck, right after the new film goes on, I'll have a chip like this yet again the next day.

My plan is to trim the loose portion of the film, clean up the ding, and apply touch up paint to make it less noticeable. After the film is shot in a few years, I might get it reapplied then, but until then I'll hold on to the current one. I'll update once I get it done.

Any advice on where I can find reasonably priced touch up paint? My dealer wants $42 bucks for Sakhir Orange II....

just get it from the dealership. If you go to a body shop, it might be off even more. Unless you have a really good bodyshop who mixes paint very well.

Most bodyshops aren't going to want to mix a small amount for much less than the $40. It takes time to mix, look up the formula, give you the bottle, etc. Plus they need to add hardener to the paint mix, so it will only be good for about 2-4 hours after mix.

Well, my dealership got back saying that they don't have C1H (Sakhir Orange II).... apparently BMW doesn't make a touch up kit for this paint.

So I'll have to get it from a 3rd party paint mixer.

wow, I went to crevier and they had it a while back.

In this case, you need to go to a quality bodyshop and have them mix it. Just be prepared to go back for a new mix, and pay a premium for it just in case. They cant just mix a few drops, they need to mix a decent amount to get the colors right.

Good luck
