the diff oil is really problem right now. No one can be sure about this. On ETK it shows: 83222365988 which is synthetik MSP/A but older M cars use SAF-XJ.
Some of you ask can it be any problem if we put wrong oil. Here is my topic, I am having a problem with the diff and it seems like they put the SAF-XJ. I am not saying that this cause the problem but I am having a problem.. http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...ight=vibration |

Indeed the latest oil for the M4/M3's seems to be: p/n 83222365988 FINAL-DRIVE GEAR OIL MSP/A http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=33_1838 Looking at your vibration thread... the firstthing that came to my mind was the cf driveshaft recall or even a bad center driveshaft bearing. I really don't see how replacing your diff fixed your vibration issue. ? Then again... there have been quite a few M2/M3/M4's with the diff's making that "crushed soda can" sound from bad ring bolts in the diff's inners. PS: Don't forget to do a new break in on your new diff - and change the diff oil after 2K kms. Not high speed runs or launches until 2K kms. Dackel

It seems like long process is waiting me. They said that BMW does not accept the "good will" cause the car had software tune, even this issue has no connection with the engine. Also the authorized service which made the mistake, looks like will try to deny/object it. Probably we will go to the court.. Always BMW and service deny and object these thing to extend the process, if car owners make even little mistake they just blame and deny the guarantee. Like on this situation, if the car owner do this oil change mistake, they immediately cut the guarantee, but when the service do this, they just do nothing.. On the other hand, the car is in the other authorized service right now and they charged me nearly 1200 dollar to just say the "the problem is diff" even I said them this in the first place.. Now if I will have to change the diff + shaft, I should pay the nearly 8500 dolar... |

There are a lot of different part numbers floating around for different parts, can we confirm the latest part numbers for the 6mt fluid, rear diff fluid, and the drain/fill plugs for each?

I need help with my 1200 miles service:
I had the service done this morning and the dealer used part # 83222357992 (SAF-XJ-832514) diff oil. From what I read here there is another oil part# 83222365988. Did the dealer use the wrong oil? should I take the car to another dealer and request the diff oil to be changed? Tx |

One note... once a car uses the +FM fluid... you always have to use it in that diff. Most euro cars don't get the +FM fluid. I suspect that the +FM fluid makes the LSD less effective(at low speeds) but that's just a hunch. Dackel

Now I have the same problem with my 2017 M4 with poor diff lock up and I am tempted to swap out whatever oil BMW used at the 1200 mile service and refill with standard Castrol SAF-XJ and see if that gives any improvement. Quote:
EDIT: I swapped out the standard BMW Final-drive MSP/A gear oil this afternoon and refilled with Castrol Syntrax 75W140 (the new name for SAF-XJ, changed years ago). Blimey what a difference it makes, now the diff locks up *before* the DSC can interfere...gives way more traction and thus acceleration in the lower gears. I believe all services are free in the USA. Over here in Germany it runs about 700 euros for the 1,200 mile "break in" service. IF you have it done while in ED... you can pay for the service(as long as it was done by a BMW dealer over here) and then submit your repair bill to BMW NA, once back home in the USA.

Seriously...
I would love to get a real answer from someone. I might call BMW NA and ask, but I'm not sure how far that'll get me. I'd love nothing more to slam a service department for lying straight to my face when I asked the question. Not to mention scraping my front CF lip while they drove it four miles. It's my fault for not doing a walk around before and after with the SA present. Luckily it's not noticeable, but if anyone is going to eff up my lip, it should be me.

I just scheduled my break in service for next week (2018 M3). My SA specifically said they would be changing the engine oil and differential fluid.

I stand corrected.
There was an additional page in my service paperwork that I didn't catch. According to that paperwork, my fluid was changed with PN 83-22-357-992 SAF-XJ. I don't understand why the SA would go out of his way to lie to me? Deflection for an answer he didn't know? Upon further review, I inspected the diff and it appears that the fluid was changed.
