I think it depends on the county you are in. I see you are in Chantilly, are you in Loudoun on Fairfax? I am in Loundoun County, and registered my car in July, and I have not gotten my bill yet. Got a notice saying that they see that I got a new car and to double check online to see if they have the right info on my car.

I am not sure when I will get my first actual bill. When I checked online, it says that I only owe for $25 for the 2017 sticker, which in due in October. I guess I might not being a actual bill until next year.

Try checking online first. Would save a long wait in line for no reason (hopefully).

I dont even see my car listed on the website. No info comes up when i put my title and vin number. I think it has something to do with my custom plates. I kept getting emails(about 5 of them) from bmw saying they need info on my plates to send to the dmv and kept sending it to them. Finally i called them and gave them the information but for some reason still doesnt show up. All my other cars show up fine on dmv website. This is my first leased car so i dont know whats going on.

I've never leased a car, so I can't truly help. But doesn't the leasing company pay the car tax and it's included as part of your monthly payment? Maybe someone else who leases regularly can step in to help out..

I've Leased many cars and they never come up on my DMV list. BMWFS pays the
personal Property Tax and on my next months payment the personal property tax
is added to my payment. Its been like that for me the last 8 years.

Kind of crazy that some of you lease guys pay 4k per year in taxes on a three year lease after factoring in the sales tax.

Not exactly. Leased cars don't get the tax subsidy, which is worth about $388 year on the first 20k of value in Arlington county.

Maybe I'm thinking of leases for business purposes they don't get any relief. Apparently now for 2016, military get 100% tax relief on the first 20k of value.

Feel your pain. I'm about to fork over 2600. Of course I'll pay it right before the due date.

Man this is one of the main reasons I hate Virginia. Getting out of that state was one of the best things that could have ever happened

Can anyone explain to me how leased vehicles get taxed in Virginia? I'm new to the area but have been thinking of leasing a winter car.

Also, if I register my car from out of state, how much would Virginia charge me?

From my understanding you pay tax on the full price of the car at 4.1%. When you transfer/register, you pay the same rate or nothing depending on how long you've owned the car. There is less incentive to lease in VA unless you can write it off through a business. Some folks do the PenFed payment saver or some other kind of ballon payment plan in order to get a low monthly payment without a large down payment. Just make sure to have gap insurance.

according to this, you have to pay unless you have proof, or your car is more than a year old:

Being registered for the first time in the Commonwealth and the applicant holds a valid, assignable title or registration issued to him by another state or a branch of the United States Armed Forces and (i) has owned the vehicle for longer than 12 months or (ii) has owned the vehicle for less than 12 months and provides evidence of a sales tax paid to another state. However, when a vehicle has been purchased by the applicant within the last 12 months and the applicant is unable to provide evidence of a sales tax paid to another state, the applicant shall pay the Virginia sales tax based on the fair market value of the vehicle at the time of registration in Virginia;
