You are right. I just looked up the rear axle fluid for a M3/M4 and it shows what was used in your service in Italy. I think its still Castrol SAF-XJ... but it would be nice to know for sure.

Anyways... here is what RealOEM.com shows...

BMW p/n 83222365988

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=33_1838

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...&q=83222365988

It's also interesting that BMW only uses this oil p/n 83222365988 on the M2/M3/M4 cars. Probably bc all these cars have an electronic locking diff. But BMW specs another oil(#83229407870) for the M5/M6 cars. And yet another oil for the X5M/X6M cars(Castrol SAF-XO). WTH ?

So the short answer is your car has the correct oil. Maybe BMW has switched to another diff oil spec recently. Because I know my info on using Castrol SAF-XJ was correct before. I will update page one of this DIY/FAQ.

Thanks! Glad to know I helped. I felt really strange wanting to disagree with the tech and my only argument was "but this post on the internet says something else". But he showed me some document and said "same". So I went with it.

I think I had the wrong info but I thought the drivetrain of the M3 shared a lot of the M5's components, including the diff? Can you remind me what parts are shared?

Thanks again!

I don't think it shares any parts with the M5. Maybe just that the rear diff is of the same kind of design: electronically locking.

The M3/M4 diff/lsd is also used on the M2.

I'm having my 1200 mile service tomorrow, do I need to tell them to change the transmission fluid or do they automatically change it as part of the service?

IF you have a manual trans... the fluid should be changed as part of the service. DCT do not get a fluid change.

After this 1200 mile service which one is next? Cause i had mine done yesterday and now it shows that the next service is at 10k miles. Is that accurate or should i go for a service at 5k miles or something?

At 10K and then every 10K, according to BMW.

However, I would be changing the engine oil more often if the car was mine. Say every 5K miles.

Just had my service completed. I asked them to confirm that the 6mt trans fluid and differential fluids would be changed.

On invoice it states performed 1200 mile run in service. There are 3 line items "SET OIL-FILTER EL, BMW TWINPOWER TUR, AND SAF-XJ.

I requested to speak to service manager to confirm as it still was not confirmed or clear to me. Service manager said engine oil and differential were replaced but not 6mt trans fluid. Service manager clearly was not familiar with my car because he mentioned activating launch control. I clarified that I have a manual so launch control is not applicable.

I will probably make another visit next week. We are 2 years in to this model so I am not sure why the dealer wouldn't have cleared this with BMW yet. They appear to be selling and servicing a number m3/m4's.

Changing the fluid on the 6MT is no longer part of the 1200 mile service. Look at your owners manual.

This is correct. I think M6 and M5 still get it though.

Thank you both. I assumed it was part of service based on other posts and since it applied to MY15's. Didn't expect the owners manual to change. Should have read my own. Wonder why dealer didn't explain difference in model years but I am satisfied now. Glad I didn't make a fuss and asked the forum before going back.

It has always been that way for F8X - no change. My car was built in July 2014 and my 1200 mile service did not include 6MT fluid change. My manual says it did, but BMW had put out a bulletin correcting the manual.

Just had my service completed today but my mechanic (also a friend) didn't change or replace the two screws for the differential. Do you think it will be OK?

Yes, bc only early builds require new plugs/screws.

As far as I know. It's all part of the maintenance plan. It covers oil changes, which is all this essentially is (well that and enabling launch control).

I think you can have the first service done at 1,200 kms.

I think anywhere from 1K to 2K kms is ok. Btw... the MPE will take several thousand kms to break in and get a deeper tone. I think it took about 8K kms before I could notice a deeper tone from my PE on my 135i. Carbon buildup changes the tone.

Brought the vehicle in for the 1200 mile service yesterday.

As part of the service, Dealer changed the engine oil and rear diff oil.

Fluids used:

Engine Oil
BMW Group LL-01 FE 0W-30

Rear Diff Oil
SAF-XJ: 832514

Tranny oil was not changed - Dealer quoted an additional fee for changing it (around $450). I declined because dealer had to order a bolt as part of the service, which they said was not in stock, and would need to keep the car until bolt arrived. I will likely bring the car in, in the not too distant future (but request they order the bolt first), so the vehicle can be turned around the same day.

I'm do for 25,000 mile service in 3,000 miles. My exhaust was hit and it hit the oil pan on the diff (#33132284835) and it has a small hair line crack in the heat sync on it.

Do you think if I provide a new oil pan during the next service while they're changing the oil in it they'll replace the cover with the new one?
