Anyone else seriously worried about the F80 M3 styling?
I'm a huge fan on the swooping lines of the new M5, the aggressive lights, the subtle movements in the body work. The new M6 isn't too bad either. Maybe I just don't get it but I don't really like the new F30, mainly the front. It seems cross eyed and like it has a pig's snout. It also has zero rake to it, yeah yeah I know european safety laws but the M5 LOOKS like the front is a smooth curve, the F30 accentuates the problem, it doesn't hide it because of the visible vertical part of the grille. You can see that the headlight go further back but then the whole combination of perfectly flat front grille and extremely swoopy lights just makes my head hurt. I've also seen the car in person and it's no better, and the angel eyes being angular doesn't help. It's starting to remind me of a cheap american car with all the angularity and snub nosed wide eyed look and that's not a good thing. Anyways I'm really hoping that they ditch all the new design features from the front wheels forward in the F80 M3 and just make a 80% sized M5. I would like if they even did that literally. I also feel like part of this craziness with BMW's new designs is that they are trying to make each model look recognizably different... by progressively making the smaller models more cross eyed. Am I the only one who feels this way or are people really that into BMW's new design direction here?

I don't like the front either, but from what I hear it looks much better in person. I haven't seen it person.
When the E9X came out, I hated the look! I thought BMW had f'ed it all up. But it grew on me, and I love it now. I'm honestly not a fan of the new look either, not even on the M5, but I am hoping it eventually grows on me too |

Nope, just ordered my wife a 335i M-Sport 6MT, fully loaded. Love the way it looks. I'm sure the M3 will look much more aggressive than the M-sport.

Regarding your remarks about the M6, remember that we have not even seen an uncovered F32 4 series yet, nevermind an F82 M4. That is to say that, the larger coupe really needn't be part of the conversation until we actually have something to compare it to. I strongly doubt that the F32 and F82 will look anything other than spectacular, especially the latter.
Regarding the F30 3 series, I can see what you are talking about in the front end design, but here again, lets wait to see what the F80 brings. It will probably retain the headlights and your "cross-eyed" look, but the rest of the front will be entirely M (and probably look much like the M5). |

I studied the F30 design extensively at the Detroit/North American International Auto Show in Jan of this year and again recently at my dealer in Mobile. I have not driven one. In my book, a car is 50% design lines and 50% performance. The F30 and the E90 are very similar in appearance from the A pillar aft. And it is safe to assume that the F32/F82 ///Ms will look similar to the E9X ///Ms from the A pillar aft. I am ok with that.
But I am no fan of the F30 front end and it is likely the F30 ///Ms will retain a similar look. Especially bothersome to me is the hood line that crosses directly above the roundel. It is, to use a scientific term, fugly. It mars the otherwise decent overall hood lines. And I don't care for the headlamp inlets to the hood either. Both of which - hood break and headlight inlets - will likely be on the new F3X Ms. And I love all of the lines on my E92, well as the performance. So design being 50% of the package for me, I am not won over. We will have to wait and see on the performance side. |

I have really high hopes for the next M3 coupe (call it whatever you want.) but I am not sure that the exterior is going to be exciting enough though. Already, I am going to miss the power dome and hood vents... That being said, BMW hasent really F'd up an M3 yet so hopefully they will come through.... I do however think the interior is going to be amazing!

I've walked right past several F30s before I realised what they were. Which says a lot about it's kerb appeal. Look nice from the back but the front is awful. In the flesh the bonnet looks too low and the lights just dont work IMHO. Compared to the E9x it doesnt look aggressive enough and would need a fairly dramatic workover by the M division before I'm remotely tempted.
Still one good thing is I don't need to feel jealous of the new model, my E92 M3 is a sexy beast and this new horror makes me love it all the more. I just couldn't walk past that front end every day, no matter how sensational it is to drive. Kind of like having a girlfriend that was great in bed but looked like a pig, and I'm a "lights on" kinda guy

The M3/M4 follows all M products , It is not about appearances it is what lies underneath.
Each M model is deliberately designed to look understated, its form is purely for function and underneath there is that reassurance and confidence that an M car has been honed to perfection with its race proven technology , dynamics , handling and precision. These are the purest expression of M product values , if its aggressive looks on the level of AMG (which look like really bad after market designs - SL63/65 , SLK55) you are after , then I am sorry these are not for you.

I'm with you! Plus, OP... check your BMW history. The vertical grill (actually FORWARD sloping) has been part of BMW's design language for years. |

I definitely agree Mercs are a bit OTT and Audi are the the masters of understatement for their halo products (S4, RS5) if I'm paying that much for a 400+ bhp car I want it to look the part (i.e. not ugly), I have to walk past the thing on the drive every morning. Taste is subjective and ultimately this is all about our individual tastes.

If there's one thing that isn't understated, it's that gigantic hood line cutting straight across the front of the car

I personally think the front part of the F80 is decent with lower fenders like the one on the m sport. IMO, the E92 looks dated compared to the F30. Probably just because it's older. |

This thread makes me appreciate how they gave the e90 M3 the front end from the e92, including the coupe style headlights.
I think the next gen will be better looking in M4 Gran Coupe form, and M4 Coupe form. The M3 Sedan may not work out so well, especially if the front end looks like the standard F30 sedan (especially the headlights). |
