Wait, what? The question wasn't "is this the best M ever developed?" The question is; are you happy with your car? Even if the guy has never had or driven a car before its still a valid comparison.

You know I also have a heavily modified e90 which I've had since new. The "jibber jabber" had me convinced for a while that there was no validity in upgrading to a new M. Honestly, didn't even look seriously at these cars during their first year in the market.

There are things I would adjust if I could (mostly software coding things in my case - engine off on door open, turn off active sound, change settings on start-up). There are a few good posts about some of those things here. But for me those things are sooo minor compared to the thrill I feel every time I sit behind the wheel.

I think the most valid complaint so far is the rattles that many are clearly experiencing. I'm not thank goodness - maybe because I've got an F83 (and therefore have no carbon fiber roof).

But make no mistake, these cars are amazing. I've driven every platform of M3 extensively (except for the E30) and I would easily put the new generation against any of them. Definitely bigger - the car has lost that "insane go-cart" feel of some of the earlier M3s. I guess that's what the M2 will go after.

These cars are freaking brilliant. I do hope however that they get this "rattle and hum" issue resolved though.

it all bears down to mindset. Moving from a 6-series to an M4, a mindset change is inevitable.
If you expect an M-car (or Porsche, Maserati, Lambo or any high performance car) to be as smooth or silent as a 6 (or equivalent), you will be disappointed. The M3/4 cars are designed to cater to a group of drivers with different priorities. I spoke to some M-owners and to them, these rattles and creaks are practically non-issues: their priorities are on how the M3/4 get up and go.
If you are going to focus on the rattles, you will not fully enjoy what the M-cars are capable of. My dealer did quieten most of the rattles but some remained. when I started focusing my mindset on why I bought an M-car, I started really enjoying what I have.

i came from a 991 to a Maserati GranTurismo to an M5 to an m4 and I am impressed too. The comments about the exhaust sound, i have fixed with the valve mod + eisenmann catback exhaust; While the power is not as impressively linear as the V8 M5 (F10), i am installing a JB Stage 1 this weekend......

Overall EXTREMELY happy and impressed - love modding the car too.

I am polite and that's it. When they stop wasting my time and fixing problems then I may give them a token of appreciation. I must admit though my salesman is top notch and gives me immediate help and attention.

I think the rattle depends on which car. Honestly doubt all of our M3/M4s have the rattles. My OCD habits would have noticed the rattles in mine, I haven't heard of them yet in mine.

I checked the link and all I get is an article about Ferrari not liking turbos (but they are switching to them anyway). What should I be seeing?

So far no rattles. I have Zero Tolerance for rattles or other quality control issues in any car regardless of how well it performs

To answer the question at hand I am very happy with the M4. Much happier than I was with the 355i E93 (before I changed out the RFTs and the crappy OEM shocks) that preceded it mainly because of the huge improvement in the way the M4 handles poor road surfaces.

No more Pothole Explosions!

Judging from your user name, is that why you have zero tolerance? I am not an audio expert but worked in the field of speech codec algorithmic exploration and development for mobiles so ear is unfortunately trained to pick up noises... And my car has plenty that I have to live with while in my day to day work I have to get rid of them for folks talking on their mobiles

Zero issues with the car - just under 2,000 miles in Europe and the states. No quality issues, and the performance is, well, awesome. Jekyl and Hyde personality. Hyde is seeing a lot of road time.......

This is starting to raise my curiosity, it seems it's binary, either people have almost quiet perfect cars, or noisy rattly cars. There are so many factors, but it certainly seems that many have noise/rattle free cars... Could some or most of you quiet cars run on perfect roads? I know when I drive on the rare few freshly paved strips, the car is ultra quiet and I have a sign of relief. But as soon as I hit the horrible roads we have , the symphony of the door, center trim, A pillar, rear speaker and rear whatever comes full force

Guys, I beg you, let's try to be civil to each other. This is just about cars and we are here to learn from each other, regardless what our opinions are.

Only a few weeks until I have had my M4 for a year. Still very quiet, no rattles, so squeaks, etc., even on rough roads. I love this car!

I also love the twin turbos and have no problem with it not being NA like my previous M3.

So you broke an F8X lease early - spending thousands of dollars - and went to a E92 instead because a) the turbo fuel efficiency wasn't all that (per your Ferrari link point) and b) you didn't like the interior quality. It's just odd given that as good a car as the E92 is (and it is) a few of the ways that the F8X unambiguously beats it is fuel efficiency and interior quality (and torque, and weight, and 0-60 and many other things excluding exhaust sound).

It's just an odd argument. Sorry it is. If you had said the rattles drove you nuts and you just couldn't take it, it would be more credible.

Re keeping it civil, I should point out that I've not leveled any direct critism at you (much less calling you an idiot or a simpleton). I simply pointed out that if I engaged in similar behavior I'd have to call myself a troll. I would also point out that at the moment that I leveled the troll behavior observation you had not disclosed that you had an E92, or that you swapped out a F8X lease, you simply had a E90 in your garage. But you have an E92, and had an F8X. Ok, whatever.

Rock on, enjoy your fuel efficient, rocking interior E92
