I think the inconsistency is normal. Half of the videos out there are captured with cell phones by people like you and me, so it's tough to get a true feeling for the sound.
Yeah, I get that a lot of the videos are taken by smartphones, but rasp is rasp and this video sounds a lot deeper than usual and is rasp free. There was a video put up yesterday where the F8X accelerates aggressively and in the upper range there is clearly significant rasp present. This car sounds completely different, and there is more to do with it than smartphones IMO. This is simply too different.

Sound is subjective though, and I don't think this sounds poor. Comparing it to your S65, sure it doesn't sound as good, and it never will for anyone having owned that car. But if this community wasn't using the S65 as a basis of comparison, this video clip would generally receive a warmer reception IMO. This is why I think a lot of previous E9X owners are harsh on the car whereas the rest of community is a lot more receptive to it. There's just a simple difference in the basis of comparison. But again, this is so subjective of a topic.

Very nice looking in action but that sound...very much like my Black and Decker electric mower. It is what it is.

Exhibit A

The difference between RWD and 4WD ladies and gentlemen. I love RWD but if ever a logical argument needed to be made about offering it on the ever increasing high power and high torque cars, this is it!

exactly

unless the OP meant that he thinks that understeering through the corner (what the x6m was doing) is more fun than oversteering through the corner (m3)

A couple of things to keep in mind:

Most of these have been clips of different pre-production cars, so the exhaust may have changed (significantly) between videos.

We don't know what recording equipment was used, or how the video was produced. Cell phone cameras have horrible microphones. Even a decent camcorder has a built-in mic that pretty much sucks. Even the high-end camcorders don't have fantastic mics, because they expect that the user will attach a real microphone. For the most part, the built-in mics are tuned to record voice well, and that's about it.

Good points.

However, I think the first paragraph is probably the predominant cause.

I completely agree, subjective is subjective and the recording device makes a difference.

Although I have a screaming banshee of a catless S65, I personally like the sound (or I liked it in the acceleration video you mentioned). Others don't for their own reason, I just think this video didn't do it any favors whereas the previous video probably elevated the common perception.
