You guys are judging the exhaust off of a phone camera? Would you listen to a concert recorded on a iphone camera microphone? Would your impression of the band be that they suck if you heard them on a iphone recording live for the first time? I think no one has basis to judge anything until they hear it in person or recorded with a decent mic.

Agreed, YouTube is full of iPhone recordings of E9X M3s, Ferraris, Lambos, Maseratis etc. and of course they don't sound as good as they do live but they sound good, the F8X don't. Any pleasant exhaust notes when I pick mine up in August will be a surprise. However I've taken this into account from the get go, sound is not one of the reasons why I buy the car this time. It's one of the expected "despites" just as lack of high rpm excitement. For me it can only be as expected or positive surprises in these areas.

Just when I was liking some of the clips, that one sounds HORRIBLE. I am the ultimate optimist but I am at a loss of words!! Something didn't record right or the equipment used to record this was faulty. It cannot sound that bad!! Wow!

The audio recording equipment is perfectly fine. This is a proper representation of the sound. It's not great, IMO.

When I record video/audio of my C63's exhaust with my iPhone, it still sounds good.

Now I'm not issuing a final verdict yet but as far as that video recording is concerned, I am not impressed. In fact, I'm a little let down.

Still not going to panic. I'll reserve judgment until I can hear it in person.

You could tape a kazoo to the C63 exhaust and it would still sound good. If the f80 sounds that bad you could always get some whistle tips.

This was recorded with a high-end camera and prosumer shotgun microphone. That's how it sounds. In fact, it sounds better in this video in some ways (louder in the video than in person).

The lower revs were to 3k (limited by the car). The higher revs at the end were to around 6500.

Def doesnt sound very good, but it also doesnt sound like he goes over 3k in the whole video. I have to imagine the sound get better at higher RPMs. Or I'm just being hopeful I guess.

It seems as if the ECU is still in the cold start sequence and is limiting the revs.

I recently got to start one up and I have to say that the YouTube clips really don't do it justice + they all sound very different. One reason for this is that the butterfly valves in the active exhaust system are mapped and controlled by the individual M Engine Dynamic Control modes. Even at idle / blipping the throttle whist stationary (i.e. no engine load) you can really hear the difference in each mode – “Efficient” is understandably muted however I thought “Sport Plus” was particularly good and nothing like the sound in that clip.

Something's not right. Either engine is cold or this has some sort of silencer on it. A 335is sounds 30 times better, hell even a refular performance exhaust sounds better. I guarantee something is not right here, a straight six should sound way better than this. Other videos that have been shown make this car sound waaaay better.
