After owning a E46 M3, a E92 M3 and a E82 1M it was clear the F82 M4 was too big for my taste.

So I bought this;

Sapphire Cayman GTS, with all the goodies, PDK, and it is just fabulous to drive !

The M2 could be next.

It was time for something different. Light, mid engine, no torque (haha), and with a small footprint (almost quite literally everything modern M cars are not). Test drove 997, 991, 982, 981, and both 981/2 put the biggest smile on my face.
I went from a tuned f80 to a base 2.7L 981 Cayman 6mt and love it... I do miss the power at times since this is my DD so I think a 981 S/GTS would be perfect!

I sometimes forget how light and nimble this car is until I drive something else lol I'm in a Cayenne loaner today and wow it is completely different

987 was not the best looking car, but 981 and 982 (718)... yeah you're probably the only one that thinks it's an ugly car

Also, LED side markers are in the mail, these orange ones have to go asap. haha.
Dude, congrats!! Is that Rhodium or GT silver? Either way it looks great The clear markers are a must and I agree, I love the sound and all the little mechanical noises it makes... that howl tho Even just idling or puttering thru parking lots feels special; I felt that way with my e92 M3, too.

Honestly, I wouldn't have even considered this particular Cayman if it didn't have X73.. I was willing to give up the power and a good bit of tech/options for the improved handling and stance. I absolutely love it, too! I was concerned at first but I've had no problems with speed bumps or getting into my parent's steep driveway when I go to visit; the overhang is longer than that of the F80 but it hasn't been a problem. I still have to be strategic at times but not as often as I thought.

With it being my DD I find the X73 more comfortable than my F80 was w/ the eibach springs. The chassis is tight but the suspension is well sorted; firm, but I find it more compliant than the M. With the X73 and 20" wheels, it isn't crashy at all!

I've had a number of fun, unique, potent BMWs. Earlier this spring I picked up a pristine Porsche Cayman S (6MT of course). The car is drop dead gorgeous, fairly quick, comfortable, and sounds better than most anything else on the road. This is my first p-car, and the attention I get in it is ridiculous.

I attend 4-5 track days a year, which is obviously where the Cayman shines best. I don't really need back seats right now, although it would be nice if I wanted to throw the dogs in the back to visit family a few hours away. I have a GX470 as a daily driver and tow vehicle.

The problem is I find myself treating the car more like a garage queen than anything. Almost like it is too nice to drive around (I know that sounds odd). So I'm contemplating selling and getting an M2 or M3. If BMW offered the four door M2 I think that would be my first choice.

Anyway, anyone left BMW for Porsche then come back? I would love to be able to have both, especially since this Cayman will likely be one of the last great driver's cars.
So fast forward to 2017. I did exact same thing. Bought my first P car in 20 years of uninterrupted BMW ownership and had same experience. I hardly drove it trying to "protect it". 2015 Cayman GTS. Amazing car, but so impractical. The M4, you can do everything with it.

Lol, therein lies the problem . . . you purchased a Porsche and hardly drove it trying to protect . . . Yep, a Porsche is not a fit for you. One can only begin to understand and appreciate what a Porsche is all about when beating the heck out of and approaching those limits.

Yup, plus mine is also my DD

However, I don't have a high-valued model; just your base, bare-bones Cayman

I have owned three Porsche cars in the past few years... a CPO 2008 Cayman S, a CPO 2011 Boxster Spyder and a new 2014 Cayman S. The Spyder was truly special but I yearned for more power so it was reluctantly traded for a new '13 M3 comp pack. I then got restless and traded the M3 for a new '14 Cayman S which was an absolute nightmare with nothing but issues. It was sold with less than 1000 miles at a big loss. To this day, my Carrara White Spyder is my unicorn. If I could find one in impeccable condition with less than 10k miles, I'd probably sell my '17 F80 comp pack car and use the money left over for a used Honda Accord for commuting. Sure, I'd be giving up some speed, but it would be worth it. I think that Porsche is producing too many cars these days and quality is really suffering for it. Their newer cars are also ridiculously priced in my opinion due to insane option packages. I daily drive my M3 and it does everything well... it has blistering speed, it's super comfy and it has four doors with a pretty large trunk. No one really notices me and I'm good with that. With that said, driving a pampered "P" car on a sunny weekend is and always will be a special experience. I also understand that the "flat six" engines are a true work of "visceral" art and your current model should be worth some serious coin in 5 - 10 plus years if the miles are kept reasonably low. To me, the new four cylinder turbo motors are yet another way to boost profit margins while wiping out the true character of the car. The flat six "howl" at 7k rpms is addictive... I love BMW but Porsche cars are will always be a niche market vehicle..hope this helps you. One more thing, keep in mind that most fickle consumers see a 40-50k + mile Porsche as "worn out" although it's far from the truth.

Nice work man. I think you have it right. If it isn't a "GT" car is going to depreciate like crazy anyway so might as well have at it

Thanks! I agree, I keep the car clean but I'm not afraid to drive it since it's going to depreciate anyway! Since it's my only car I basically have no choice anyway lol

I went from a 335i to a '12 Cayman S, leased it at first, liked it so much I bought it out and kept it another two years. I put around 60k miles on it, only issue was a fuel sensor that cost about $2k to fix out of warranty. I then traded it for a '13 Carrera S about a year ago, love it even more! Maintenance is expensive, just had to do the front brakes with sensors and rotors and it was around $1500.
I had several Audis starting in the mid 90s. Had no problems except for an A8 which had problems with one of the oil pans that cost about $3k to fix.
My BMW was the most unreliable car I had, it was when they had problems with the HPFP.
