Is it necessary to code after replacing a headlight?

The glass of a front headlight is damaged and I would like to change it. From the information I have gathered, replacing just the glass is a lot of work and success is not guaranteed and then you would see that it has been manipulated. BMW sells the casing of the new headlight on which I will have to install the LED lamps and control units of the old one. Once assembled, will it need to be coded or, having only used a casing and the components of the old one, is it not necessary?

I swapped both my front headlights from rhd to LHD recently. As all the modules were a direct swap there was no coding required at all

I’d you keep your old modules you might need to recode. But if you are using new modules then you will need to code again

So using the modules from the old headlights on the new ones, they worked straight away with no error messages. Did you have to level them or did they also level automatically?

Correct. Worked straight away and then when I was going thru the TUV where the beam pattern was the only issue and forced me to swap them, the beams were set too low but the tester was cool and raised them to the highest level permissible.

So once you have them swapped they should work straight away and as mine are adaptive they started moving about too as I turned the wheel.

One top tip. Beware of the Hell square nut that tends to spin on the bottom brackets of the headlights.

I’ll post the link
