Smoothly Shifting 6MT from 1st to 2nd
I have been driving the car for week or so and I still can't get the smooth shift from 1st to 2nd. The rest are fine. Is that because of all the torque the car has, or with time I can learn it?
Never had this problem in a 330ci

Dont have the car yet but very good chance if ur used to driving manuals this attributes to the extra torque that u dont necessarily find on dd's. Just a matter of time till u get used to it.

I found if you shift prior to 3k RPM for daily cruising it's smooth on a 6MT without any special maneuvers..
Otherwise you have to just be better at driving a 6MT for smoothness. I'm able to do it smoothly but only in efficient and sport mode. Sport plus it drops revs so fast, it's pretty hard to do a smooth shift. But! If you're driving it the way sport plus should be driven I found it to be smoother than non-Ms. |

Have you tried shifting to 2nd very quickly (almost immediately after starting to move)? If you are running in auto mode, don't use sport + and set the speed of the shifts to 1.

almost always the same problem, too quick off the clutch too slow on the gas. happens to the best of us
work on slowing down your clutch release and adding more throttle. 1st to 2nd drops revs faster than the higher gears so you have to feed in more throttle |

The manual on my E46 M3 was great and the one on my M4 is outstanding.

Totally agree - OP - any roughness you're experiencing is just a function of unfamiliarity. The 6MT on this car in my opinion is better and smoother than the E9x generation (from my limited driving experiences on said 6MT's -my current E93)

Good Q. I cannot imagine M-sport would do anything to diminish response. Removal was an improvement on my 335.
My thoughts are that first to second shift requires tire spin to be smooth.

I guess I am probably doing something wrong, but I have had no issues at all with upshifts on my 6MT. My issues have come on downshifts, particularly from 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd, when slowing down from highway speed to stop in fairly short distances. I guess I don't have the auto-rev matching mastered yet, but I get some disconcerting drivetrain "clunking" on some of those downshifts.

I feel the rev match is spoiling me. I can't drive smooth AT ALL in sport+. This car is so awesome, I'm having a real hard time keeping the rpms below 5000k especially when accelerating in 2nd gear. Is this whole "break-in" thing really necessary? |

^^ this is exactly how it is.. Give it more throttle and you will be fine.. Took me about 3-4 days to figure it out

6MT smooth shifting
So I got my 6MT F80 delivered this weekend. I've been having a great time driving around town. Now, I'm not going to pretend I'm a great driver that can rip it up with some of you on this forum but I'm not a newb either. So my issue is... I can't seem to get a smooth shift from 1st gear to 2nd gear. I have a tendency to kind of bob on the throttle when shifting 1-2. I think it has to do with the initial bob when I depress the clutch to change gears. The throttle blips as I bob, and when I let go of the clutch which causes another bob. The end result is kind of a jerky shift. I can get a smooth shift if I really concentrate on releasing the clutch very very slowly. Efficient mode seems to be a little easier to get a smooth shift, but I like the throttle response and sound in Sport.
Now I've been driving manuals for about 20 years now. The only automatic I've had was the car right before this one. I know it's not because I'm rusty as I've driven manuals while I had the automatic car. Maybe it has to do with the M3 having more power and torque than any car I've had in the past? I'm open to any lessons and suggestions you guys can offer. |
