input please from anyone with H&R Sports fitted
Update - Problem solved, see page two for solution! with video..
Hi All, before i get the natural response of "this is what happens when you go the cheap route on suspension" lol ive recently fitted H&R sports (30mm drop all round) to my 2016 M4 and am having a few issues. The car was aligned using a hunter system after fitting (before springs had settled which isnt ideal). first issue im having is there is a clunking noise coming from both front sides that i notice when going slowly over bumps. the place that fitted the springs tried to fix it and ended up taking it all off and fitting again. The noise went away but after 1000 miles its back again. someone mentioned it might be the bushes that are now taking more strain and have gone but the car has only done 18K so im dubious of that being the cause. second issue is the behaviour of the rear end after the spring change. where it used to be a progressive overstear when getting on it out of roundabouts, bends etc it now wants to hop. its quite unnerving when you are balls out flooring it and the rear skips over the road rather than sliding progressively. Is this just the way it is when youve lowered a car on standard shocks or does this point to an alignment issue? all input welcome, just want to educate myself as im sure if i go to a dealer they will just blame the springs and be totally unhelpful. Cant go back to the original fitting garage either as they are friends of mine and after they refitted once already they dont know what else they can do.

im assuming that wont effect the clunking noises im getting but rather the rear end behaviour?

I really want to lower my car but I'm not prepared to just get some inexpensive springs as it will look better but not handle/drive better, so I'm holding out for either the MP HAS or a proper set of coil overs like the ACS RS set up. A friend specialises in fitting H & R springs to 3/4 series that he buys in tarts up with the MP kit and retails and would put a set on mine for buttons he says they are good springs and doesn't have any issues but I'm not so sure on an M car. I just need to justify the cost to myself of the coilovers.

Not enjoying reading the problems you have OP My M4 Comp is booked in for H&R springs next week. Been debating this the last 6 months. Had a look at Kw's & bmw performance adjustable springs, but in the end settled on the H&R's. Will keep you's updated next week once there fitted. Really hope I don't waste the car as the handling is spot on. Just sitting a bit high.

incidentally the clunking goes away in the wet. so I'm leaning towards it being something to do with bushes or something rubber. (based on my zero mechanical knowledge lol)

The stance looks really good! I'm also in the "debating getting springs club" and have been pricing up options, I'm afraid based on your experience I'm going to play it safe and go for ACS! Good luck getting yours sorted though

H&R's fitted today at GSR. What a difference car feels far more planted & stance is exactly what I wanted. No issues so far after a good wee spirited run 30/40 miles.

Car feels absolutely perfect so far Jim. Gave it a spirited run last night & feels a bit stiffer, turn in feels more planted. No skipping or anything like that. Pm your phone number or email. My Photobucket isn't working.

Does it sound like it coming from the steering rack?
hhttps://youtu.be/xqhQKL_m2fg If so, it deffo is your top mount plate bearing. Usually damaged during installation due to over torque and not using BMW specification. I had a 1000 other issues with my drop but I wont go on about it here, but basically all down to poor installation. Mine was with ACS springs and I know of at least three other M3 having had identical issues to the above link. Also would make hideous noises over bumps and when driving slow. |
