You can also push the brake shield back with your hand.

After it have been replaced, the noises minimal maybe 2-3 times a week of driving.

Today I just experienced literally 10 minutes of driving on turns and straight lines and just screeeeeetch. Its like my exhaust is getting drag on the ground but thats not it.

I have told my dealership about it but they couldn't replicate the same noise.

Someone please help me figure wth is going on!!!!
It's the rear brake shields. There is a service bulletin for them, make an appointment, and tell your SA what you're hearing. I have not heard any noises since having them replaced.

Do you know the SA number by any chance?

"SA" means your Service Adviser at your dealer.

Updated brake rotor shields - Round 2

Okay, just had 2nd revised version of replacement "protection plates" installed. First ones I had done August 2015 were part #34-21-2-284-745. These were #34-20-8-053-265 (left) and #34-21-2-284-746 (right). Time will tell if they are better. Winter gravel from roads is slowly being removed.

My shop is actually designing modified covers for the holes that should be shipping out to BMW North America soon. I'll keep everyone updated.

I've had my car for over a week, 2017 F80 and it happened. What a horrible sound.
I guess I'll have them add the protection plates when I go in for the 1200 mile service.
Are the part #s #34-20-8-053-265 (left) and #34-21-2-284-746 (right) or are there newer ones?

Thanks in advance.

What holes are you referring to?

Those are the latest, however I would think yours would have these updated parts as they started with 10/16 production, I believe. Confirm with your dealer.

In our testing, we've found excessive road debris is getting ingested through those holes.

Just wondering why BMW would put them there - any thoughts?

Took my car out for my first long Saturday drive; had this grinding happen not even 15 feet into the only gravel parking lot I drove into.

Rock seems to have fallen out fairly quickly, but as it's a 07/14 build I imagine it still has the original brake plates. Thanks for the info in this thread, I'll try to get this taken care of at my local dealer.

Interesting that you had them replaced twice. I had mine done about 1.5 years ago on a first allocation F82. I've had it happen once since replacement but just pushed the plates back and it fell out like usual. At this point, it's more of a hassle than it's worth since they replaced the wheel bearings the first time if I remember correctly.

Yeah, it's fairly involved, but lots of gravel on roads around here this Winter meant more than usual screeching. I had to leave it overnight but had a new 440i cabrio loaner so wasn't much of a pain.

2017 BMW M4 rotor / back plate rubbing

Pointed this out at my 1200 mile service yesterday to dealer. The sound was even re-created on the spot. BMW has a fix kit for this (replacement of rotor back plates I believe). The dealer is awaiting parts and I will return to get it fixed. Supposedly a 5 hour job.

The dreaded noise hit me last night. First thing I thought was brake shields.....there was some SMALL debris in there but not enough to make those kinds of noises (or so I thought). I've shown my SA this and he is ordering me now shields. Time will tell.

Sorry, I haven't searched this entire thread, I did post here that I've had the screeching of a rock stick against the brake & plate....

But does the active sound also exacerbate the sound of ANY gravel we drive over? This weekend, if I was driving over even paved roads at a crawl with just a little bit of gravel on them, I'm hearing plinking like I'm getting pelted by hail or driving on a dirt road at 60 MPH.
